One year already down, and I still love this thing like the day I got it!

Hello, all.

I bought a Quicksand TRDP a few months ago. Shortly after that, it got sent to heaven. Its replacement came from thiskindof shady dealership in Houston, where the owner of the dealership installed these monster 20x10s with 33x12.5 Treadwright Mud Claws. Other than the tacky (IMO) silver trimmings on the wheels, I did like the way it looked. It obviously rubbed, but moved the fender liner forward a good 2" and trimmed the hell out of the bumper, which gave a surprising amount of clearance up front. It only lightly rubbed the body mount at full lock, though much more with even mild wheeling (just a sandy road with occasional curb-sized bumps heading out to a camp sight--with those tires only a few spots even needed 4WD). I think having a shop realign it with a few extra degrees of castor would have helped move the wheel away from the BM enough to prevent rubbing during daily driving, but it likely would have still rubbed under even moderate articulation. The turning arc was just so large given they stuck out like 2.5" past even the factory TRDP wheels, heh.

I liked the way it looked and appreciated the tires' traction without having to air down, so I was planning on just painting the wheels black. But, ultimately, while we surprisingly only lost about 1mpg over stock (20-21 rather than 21-22), the wife hated the reduced ride quality, tire noise, and rubbing. (50lb extra per corner and stiff E-rated 20" tires will do that!). Since street manners were among the many reasons we chose the 4runner over an Unlimited, I bought a set of 17x8s and wrapped them in some generic 285/70r17 ATs from the local tire shop (that is all they had at the time, and I was kindof rushing to get them on for a road trip). It rides much better now, though I admittedly used to get a lot more compliments with the previous shoes, haha. I might split the difference in the future with a set of 17x9s and a slightly more aggressive tread like K2s or Grappler 2s, and maybe sooner rather than later if I find traction wanting with these.

I am still debating a Toytec 2" lift. I used to have a Samurai lifted 5" on 31" mud tires with a locked rear end, so I got most of the "hey, Skeeter, watch me drive up this!" out of my system. Really, with this, I only intend to do more overland type offroading, and I generally like the "rally" look of a wider stance without a lot of height. But, obviously, next to quality tires, a lift has probbly the best cost to benefit ratio for offroading. So, we'll see!

How did your first one end up in heaven? And how the heck were you able to find another Quicksand?

1) My wife was driving it and got into an accident :/ . The kickers were all the airbags + a lot of front fascia damage + right front crumple zone + slight body tweak that caused the total loss. Apparently the salvage value was over $18k, though :0 .

2) For the second dealer, I paid over the phone and flew out a couple days later ti get it.

Man, I must really love my wife... :P

(When I bought the first one, the only 3 out of 4 within 500 miles sold in a 24-hour period, so I was definitely worried when the insurance guy told us it was a loss!).
