It's normal I just got myself some Rust-Oleum and a small brush and looks original.

I can totally understand your annoyance as that's literally more rust than my 99 has... Very bothersome, although not a big deal.
Yes, it's normal. As others said, cast iron parts that aren't painted are going to have surface rust on them. That surface rust will never "rust through" in your entire life time. but if you want them to look nice, go ahead and get a wire brush, clean them up, spray with a good marine grade high bond primer and top coat them. It may still come back eventually but it's really cosmetic.
The frame welds rusting bother me a bit more because they didn't use to do that so quickly. I think they've thinned their e-coating a bit.
Just thank God you don't have a Ford!
Some genius there in the 80's or 90's decided they didn't need to waste money painting their cast iron engine blocks anymore. They were coming to the lots looking like they were just drug up out of the ocean...

Most auto owners aren't as crazy as us and would never look under their cars to begin with. Some of those unfinished surfaces are where other systems type parts would mate up. For example Toyota has KDSS and normal swaybars, both mount in different locations, and then there is the XREAS system, it to mounts differently IIRC.

yup, I'd say 95% of 4Runner owners never get under the vehicle and 50% never even open the hood.
What you have there is a normal 4Runner.
It's cast iron and came across the ocean on a boat that wasn't hermetically sealed. Anything of this nature will show up with surface rust even prior to use.
This "condition" does not and will not ever adversely effect the functionality of the vehicle and since cosmetic warranty items usually have to be visible from the driver seat during normal use or 10 foot of exterior while walking around the vehicle... crawling under a vehicle to see some surface rust does not qualify for warranty as it is intentionally designed this way. Get over it and find something else to complain about... jeese

Having a bad day? I don't think anything written in this thread thus far merits a personal attack like that.You don't think I know thatidiot! No Toyota wouldn't put some Rust-Oleum on it but it better than nothing!
Anyway, back to the thread. As many people have said before that rust is normal. Crawl under any other car in a parking lot or even the new cars at the dealership lot and you'll see some light surface rust on a bunch of the components.
