TRD / SR5 capability comparison?

Here we go again! The SR5 crew will insist their rigs are every bit as capable as the Trail/OR with a rear locker because they have “never” been in a situation where it is needed. The Trd versions are more capable...end of discussion! Rear lockers are more capable than no lockers, and front/rear lockers are more capable than rear only. Anyone who thinks otherwise has no clue what they’re talking about...IMO

Give it a rest. If someone thinks ATRAC is 100% as capable as a locker they’re idiots, but not as big of an idiot as someone who says there’s no need for sliders on an SR5. That thread was derailed solely by mteolus and he can’t seem to drop it. Weird the SR5 takes up so much space in his head.

No offense bro, but when I’m stuck out in the woods with my family, and if sh*t ever hits the fan and my only option is rear diff/CC, I’m not concerned with “driving experience”. We’re talking about a 4X4 SUV here...you want to experience something prolific while driving, buy a Ferrari.

No offense taken, but everyone's off-road experience appears to differ greatly depending on where you go and what you like to do. There is a reason people cherish rigs like the FJ40. It's the raw mechanical driving experience it delivers.

I think it's important to note that I am not arguing that CC/Lockers doesn't increase the capability, it absolute does, no argument there. But having used CC for recreational work, it's almost too easy and the drive becomes boring. That said, even if you have it, doesn't mean you have to use it. Used as a tool for recovery sounds good to me.

If you consider the re-sale value of the Trail/TRDOR/Pro models compared to the SR5, then the additional features and capability are essentially free. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

Plus... HOOD SCOOP.

You will forever have an inferiority complex about your SR5 when you get passed by another 4runner with their hoodscoop. They ARE looking down on you.

Don't have hood scoop and can confirm, I feel inferior every time I see one.

IMO a trail/Trd pro are great if you lack the knowledge of doing your own mods. I bought my SR5 for 36k out the door, purchased my Dobinsons 2in lift for $750, purchased my ARB bumper for $1700 and did the install myself for both which allowed me to get to a total of $38,450. ARB locker will be coming in next year. You can’t go wrong with any of the models however. It all depends on what you want to do and what you can independently do from a mod perspective.

Lolz...at stereotyping Trail/OR owners as not being mechanically inclined. I’m into my 2016 Trail with Bilsteins, JBAs, SCS, Falkens, Cali Raised, Rago, RCI for less than $38,450 so I guess I win the interweb pissing contest.

Going back to #3, I had a 2012 TRD Sport (and before I get flamed I am not going to put that in the same category as the TRD Offroad 4Runner) and honestly I really got poop for the extra money I spent. It had TRD shocks which rode like crap in NYC, other than that it was all cosmetic upgrades. Outside of KDSS (my step father has it in his TRD which admittingly it does ride "slightly better") and a Locker what else do you get?
there was no 2012 "TRD" model... just the Trail Edition. was this some kind of dealer installed package?

Haha no you don’t, play chicken with me and my ARB foo we will see who wins :naughty:

This thread reminds me of the guy on FB that says Limited can do whatever and TRDOR can do lol. As others have already stated, the OR has a rear locker. 95% of the time you will never need it. 99% of people on here will never traverse terrain where they need it. The SR5 with a good driver behind the wheel should be able to do nearly everything but the gnarliest trails (which probably require a front locker and huge tires anyways!). Remove the badging and drivers would not be able to tell trims apart lol. Come to think about it...an SR5 that saved 4k with no locker but has Kings around would probably fair better than a fully stock TRDOR LOL!

P.S. I went out to the dunes and intentionally got stuck to test crawl control. GIMMICK. I was stuck in sand up to the frame and it tried forward and reverse before "High Tranny Fluid Temperature" warning came on and stopped. All the crawl control videos on youtube are bologna. In those instances, you can get out using your brain and offroad skills. I guess it is just for noobies or a selling point.

tacoyota perfectly said sir, my earlier statement was to rile up all of the trail and trd owners :). The rear locker has the advantage and there is no argument there which allows the trails and trds to have an edge over the SR5. Enjoy what you have and smile and wave at your brothers and sisters on the road. I always do :).

False!

Claims 99% in here won’t experience off road terrain where a rear locker is beneficial...then proceeds to pull a Hasselhoff, and go sand swimming.

There is no arguing that a TRD Off Road and TRD Pro are more capable offroad than an SR5 or Limited. I totally regret not being more patient to find one when I was looking.

Having said that as others have mentioned in this thread ATRAC alone is usually enough to get you through 95% of off road conditions. However, it definitely makes things more challenging and dramatic as you need wheel slippage to trigger the system while a locker gives you the power right from acceleration.

The reality is that 99% of 4runner owners including the folks on this forum will never put their rigs in a situation where a locker would be the only way through. So all this arm chair quarterbacking is pointless. I take my rig on "33"+ lockers required" trails all the time and never have a problem. Driver experience and picking a good line does matter. Also, willingness to accept body and chassis damage doing these trails goes a long way too.

So what I'm trying to say is it doesn't matter. It's more important to get out there and get your rigs dirty vs. starting a flame war on the internet about who's rig is more capable. (Especially if you're really not using it.)

Here you guys go with this “99 %” rule in regards to those who will need a rear locker. It’s as if there are ten different ghost accounts in here, regurgitating the same drivel. It doesn’t matter how functionality is being utilized, that’s not what we are discussing....we are talking about what platform is more capable. The argument that something isn’t used, so it doesn’t apply is freaking ridiculous. Fact: a vehicle with rear/front lockers are more capable than a vehicle without...I don’t give a crap whether it gets utilized.

I would also venture to guess, based on the slider, skid, suspension upgrades people are running in here, your “99 %” assertion is pure trash, and nothing more than pulling arbitrary numbers out your ass!

If you look at my first statement you'll see I agree with you. My argument is who cares?

Then where are you guys getting this 99% rule then? 99% is essentially all...so you’re stating that not one person with a rear locker will ever use it off road. You realize how ridiculous this sounds?

Read my statement more carefully. I said 99% of 4runner owners will never put their rig in a situation where a rear locker would be the only option out. In low traction situations (ie a rear wheel up in the air) I would for sure opt to have the rear locker engaged vs relying on ATRAC. It would make it a much smoother exit out of that situation vs. the truck bucking and jerking back and forth as ATRAC does its work.

I've used several and owned a regular cab 2wd chevy with the auto locker and I can say a locker is better on a 2wd than a 4wd for most people. Like I said before a locker doesn't do much when 4wd wont get you out, especially when talking about a flat area. I do see lockers aiding climbing scenarios.

One work truck without a locker got stuck on what was essentially wet pavement with a light glaze on it. Pathetic.
