TRD / SR5 capability comparison?

Wheeling is too dynamic to really argue the difference especially when they are the same truck. It's not like we're talking train bike vs enduro bike here.

5th Gen 4Runner Off-Road Features, 4Runner Off-Road Settings Guide

Which model to purchase is truly up to your personal needs and wants.
I found this article while surfing the Web and found it informative on what all the various capabilities of the TRD OR are used for and more importantly when and how to use them.

Many of you may have experience enough to not need them or at least you already know how to use them. This is great information for those that don't know or understand what or how to use them. It may help some make an informed decision on what you think you might need if you are lucky enough to be looking for a new 4Runner.

This whole thread and discussion is fueled by people trying to justify buying an SR5 because of their budget. No one actually believes that an SR5 is OBJECTIVELY as capable as a Trail/Pro. Period. Furthermore, anyone that could have sprung for the Trail/Pro, DID.

Stop being insecure and just love your truck.

Save up and add your locker later or admit you just wanted to save some cash so you could add LEDs and other mostly aesthetic mods which are more important to you than real capability. That's OKAY TOO.

I got another SR5 because I dont want any other stuff on it. I also hate softex. If I wanted to get hardcore off road I would get a raptor or Rubicon. As frequently as parts break offroad toyota reliability and fit finish dont matter.

Also my toyota service department is the best around, our 2012 Camry needed a new short block and had the transmission issue as well. Shop support is important and not being jerked around has a lot of value.

The sales department has stayed the same for nearly 20 years.

Here you guys go with this “99 %” rule in regards to those who will need a rear locker. It’s as if there are ten different ghost accounts in here, regurgitating the same drivel. It doesn’t matter how functionality is being utilized, that’s not what we are discussing....we are talking about what platform is more capable. The argument that something isn’t used, so it doesn’t apply is freaking ridiculous. Fact: a vehicle with rear/front lockers are more capable than a vehicle without...I don’t give a crap whether it gets utilized.

I would also venture to guess, based on the slider, skid, suspension upgrades people are running in here, your “99 %” assertion is pure trash, and nothing more than pulling arbitrary numbers out your ass!

Every time I see you post you are angry. Members are just trading information. Relax

that's pretty awesome. I wish the service department were I used to go was that good. found another one, that all the dealership has is Tacos, Tundras, 4runners (when able to keep in stock) and Rav4s

I go wheeling with tacos, 4runners of all gens, fj's, and LC's. Nobody on trail runs ever talk about trims like trail, pro, sr5, etc. I guess it's only an internet thing.

I have the cash to buy 140 TRD Pros. We bought the SR5. It’s more than capable. Your point is?

to say that an SR5 is just as capable as an offroad and/ or pro is ignorant. the offroad and pro models have a rear locker and crawl/ terrain settings. even if you actually need them in .001% of the time when you're in the dirt, its still slightly more capable.

I have an SR5 and I don't get stuck, but that has more to do with a lift and bigger better tires than stock. Went out with a brand new offroad today that was pretty much fresh off the lot. We litteraly took his running boards off in a wawa parking lot before heading out. He got stock several times through out the day, in water. The locker and crawl didn't help much.

We also had a stock pro along with us... that guy had no issues due to the better tires.

I would have to agree with softex. I got the Limited because I wanted ventilated seats. We love our Limited. I test drove an OR and after 10 minutes in Phoenix heat I could not stand it. The softex was killing me. I don't off road so the other stuff is not needed. Will I lift or rim and tire it, or maybe put the forbidden sliders on my sr5? Maybe, but no rush now. I love the Cadillac ride. It can swoop and dive and roll. I love it. I may even lean a little when I drive.

I'm not sure why SR5 owners feel so inferior to the point of name calling anyone that believes the OR is more capable than an SR5. You should feel proud that you own a Toyota truck. So you couldn't afford an OR or Pro or you didn't do your research and just bought a "4x4", no big deal. It will still get you to the ski resorts and some light off-roading, perhaps jumping a curb or cutting across to the access road when in heavy traffic. As you pass by another one, you can hold your purses up in triumph to all the other soccer moms out there driving them.

It's like those who want to buy a Harley but don't have a lot of money. They buy a 883 Sportster, replace the gas tank with a bigger one, and add some loud tail pipes. Even though it is not as capable as say a Fat Boy or a Road King, they can still ride it with pride with the big boys and feel proud that they own a Harley.

Cheers to all those that own an SR5! You guys rock!

Illustrates the value of better tires off road, and that driving skill definitely makes a difference.

I'm an SR5 guy that agrees a locker makes a vehicle more capable off road. I am not a hard core offroader so don't need the locker. If that changes, so will the vehicle's options.

Factory lockers are nice, but you can add lockers later on so that's not a huge deal.

Terrain/CRAWL control is awesome if you know how to use it and is worth having.

KDSS changes the driving dynamics on and off road for the better, it's probably why it's standard on all higher end Toyota/Lexus vehicles.

Can you go far with a lifted SR5 with added lockers? Yes.

What's the question again?

So if it's 'more than capable' enough for your uses... why are you participating in this thread?

The point (pay attention this time)... is that the SR5 IS NOT as capable as the Trail/Pro. It's a completely objective conclusion based on mechanical capabilities of the two vehicles.

The fact that this thread even exists, and exists over and over and over, is because people who bought or are thinking of buying an SR5 need some sort of reassurance or catharsis from other SR5 owners that it will be 'good enough.' Sure, it will be for most people. But NO, it is NOT as capable. Period.

factory electronic lockers >>> aftermarket air lockers

does anyone make an aftermarket e-locker that fits?

I've heard SR5 people claim ARB makes one but I don't think they have enough money yet to get one to try it out. I have also heard ARB lockers are not as reliable as factory Toyota lockers.
