TRD Supercharged $runner mpg?

Believe it or not rack may have to do with the mpg but I don't see it that significant. I completely removed my rack and tire and literally got 3-4 mpg on my v8 4x4.

I'm going to have to rule out the rack because with it I was getting 250 miles per 3/4 tank before and the Yakima was extended length, taller and angle of the fairing was more flat vs. the rola that I am going to be getting rid of soon.

I was under the impression that this was only for longevity. Some sort of system on the 5vz fires twice as many times, or something, and thus the dual ground plugs makes them last as long as single ground plug would on an ignition system that doesn't have the before mentioned system.

I don't know enough about it to argue, or really even discuss, but for PERFORMANCE, I don't think the number of ground electrodes should matter.

No, definitely not. I think we are saying the same thing. What does matter is how fast it eats up the plug. One ground means it won't last long like what the OP experienced.

For the record I have IK22's in my 4Runner right now.
 
Yes but that is applied to a n/a 5vz-fe, we are dealing with a forced induction setup 5vz-fe there is a difference and the n/a motor logic does not apply here.

It is still the same spark system though, boosted or not. A single ground plug will not last nearly as long and a dual ground plug, that's why it is mentioned and recommended by Toyota.

You can still run the stock copper plugs with a supercharger, nothing in the manual says you have to switch.
 
Food for thought guys the ik22's are an iridium plug vs the ngk bcpr7et's are copper plugs. Would this be the issue that is creating my nightmare?

Copper is supposed to perform better (a better conductor of electricity) but not last as long.

Platinum is supposed to last the longest, but have the worst performance (worst conductor).

Iridium is supposed to be a middle ground... Pretty good conductor (worse than copper, better than platinum), and pretty good longevity (longer than copper, shorter than platinum).

I would think that a 3 prong copper plug would be a solid plug for this application, but it just doesn't seem to be the case.

For what it's worth, this is the only vehicle I have ever run iridium plugs in. I prefer copper, but nothing other than the IK22 seems to make my engine happy.
 
I would throw out the thought of the upstream O2 sensor aka the AF (air fuel) sensor. I did a full time up on my na and just after noticed a drop to about 8mpg from 14-16 and I knew I was going to be going on a 1300mi trip for Christmas. I was frantically looking for reasons and came across a thread about the O2 sensors. So I replaced them and on the way out I got 17-18.5 from MT to MN but only got about 13-14 on the way back but that was from heavy head winds and hills and never getting a break from it. Don't have any city numbers yet but seems like it helped. I did bother my up and down stream sensors being they have 215k on them.
 
Do you have a Scanguage and/or is it throwing any codes? If it's staying in open loop, it could be using a lot of fuel trying to compensate for a bad O2 signal.
 
Slightly stuck caliper/drum? causing drag you might not even notice. 100 miles is drastic. I would start with what you changed as the culprits (plugs and roof rack). Your logic with your roof rack probably makes perfect sense in your head but until you actually test your theory, it's just a theory.
 
I agree with tk_Kistin - upstream O2 sensor will cause that drastic drop. Clean your MAF too. That was worth 6mpg for me a couple months ago.
 
Maf was actually cleaned as well a week ago forgot about that.

Did the cleaning coincide with the drop in mileage? They are easy to damage if you don't let them dry before running? But that should come with a CEL.
I would still suspect upstream O2 in conjunction with winter gas.

That's what I mentioned above too- I'd like to see the A/F just for curiosity.
Seems apparent that SOME component went haywire. I'm not convinced the plug change would cause THAT drastic of a mileage drop. Just my novice opinion though.
 
So the first thing you need to do is learn how to calculate your MPG. Judging your MPG by tankful is not sufficient to tell if you have seen a decrease in mpg.

To measure mpg

1) Fill the tank to full.
2) Drive around until you need fuel again. Record mileage. Account for wheel difference from stock. Bigger tires will go farther than recorded.
3) Fill tank to full. Record number of gallons used.
4) Miles / gallons to get Miles per Gallon.

Ideally you will use same pump to pump gas, as shutoffs might be different sensitivities and a slope on the ground can have an effect in number of gallons pumped.

Sometimes I will see an exceptionally high mpg, but normally it will be followed by a lower than normal mpg tank.

Other things that can affect mpg by a few mpg is speed, 60mph vs 80 is worth about 2mpg, gas (i.e. winter blends vs summer blends, ethanol percentage).

I am assuming you are using 91+ octane gas, otherwise you ecu is pulling timing like mad to keep detonation down due to supercharger. Can pull the ecu fuse or disconnect battery to force a reset.

The biggest reason for seeing lower fuel economy is probably the fact you just put on a SUPERCHARGER, and combined with something called a LEAD FOOT always leads to reduced fuel economy.

No the cleaning was not the cause and it was done after the mileage drop. Everything except the plugs done on my list were after the mileage drop which is why I am suspecting plugs.
 
Any exhaust leaks? If so that makes it tough for the O2 sensors to do their job and they may fatten the mix.

I'm running 50psi in my KO2's and that helped a bunch too. I also believe gas companies use a winter mix that takes mileage away. May take a couple tanks of clean gas for you to get a true mileage comparison.

no exhaust leaksor such. just poped the ik22's back in the 4runner. ill post pics of the NGK BCPR7ET's tonight.
