2002 Silver T4R SR5 4x4 110k when purchased

Here it is the day we brought it home from the dealer (I now largely regret buying from dealer, but I will say it was MINT, so clean, and they had done timing belt and 4 new Cooper Discoverers, so that's nice).

Work so far:

Curt roof rack (still debating if I want an extension or not)
RB deletion
B&M 70264 (larger) trans cooler
13WL Tundra 231mm brake upgrade
98 bumper/valance swap
OEM Toyota "Trac Off" switch for disabling VSC/Trac on the fly.
Lower ball joints (just need to put them in)

As it sits now:

Plans:

Underbody treatment (wire-wheel, rust conversion, encapsulation)
Moderate lift, likely 5100s w/OEM T4R springs on 5th perch (front), OME 890 rear, or 99 talls and new shocks all the way around.
(Maybe) Panhard drop, 3rd gen front end links on rear sway, etc.
Possibly powder/paint wheels at next tire change, which will go to 265/75s (could be 2015)
Tube bumpers, I think. I want a front tube with stinger that also semi hides the stuff behind it, maybe with more tubing in a few places than is the norm. For the rear I like the tube style and will probably just paint a black strip around the body behind the bumper, as I've seen done and like.

I still don't know if I want to build this thing much, seeing how I still owe on it, or just make it quasi-capable and save up for a cheaper rig that I can build more guilt-free. When this is paid off I could give it to my son and build it (he's almost 13 now) for his first car. We'll see!

Needed a roof rack if we were going to bring everything we needed on this vacation (we have 2 sons, too). I opted to mount it to the tracks, rather than WAY up high on top of the factory rack. Here are a few pics of my first "mod".

Here's a few pics from vacation, note the Mt Rushmore street sign (Black Hills). Also on the beach at Lake McConaughy in W Nebraska....needed 4WD to get to and from there. Relatively steep, soft sand trail with large ridge in center.

We visited friends while in SD, they also have a T4R SR5, but they had no running boards. I had been on the wife about removing ours, so this sealed the deal. Looks much better now:

Ordered the larger B&M tranny cooler, the 70264. Eventually I'll replace the rad, too. but here's a few pics of the finished install, including the modified horn mounting bracket to clear the receiver line:

Approx 112k miles.

I'm planning to replace some stuff, so I figured I'd just post pics of the existing bushings. I just took these. Oh, and does the angle of the sway bar link at the lower mount look right? I thought it seemed odd it was so cock-eyed.

The end link bushings are toast, just wondering if the links should be angled like that? The rack bushings I can't tell, but I'm guessing they aren't great. I can't really see much on the LBJs, but they look non-new, so I guess that get's added to the list...

And yeah, I need to wire-brush and undercoat things...I know

Nice clean 4Runner. How many miles?

I got married two months ago and the wife is pretty mod-compliant. That said, I did install the supercharger BEFORE we got married. :zoom::zoom:

updated for mileage when purchased (110k).

I still don't know if this will be the wife's 4R eventually or what. We owe on it, which I hate, and she doesn't want to go as crazy as I would. I want regear, lockers, 3-4" lift, black steelies, armor, etc. I may end up buying one in a few years since my son is 11 (he'll be driving soon, right?!?) and modding the hell out of it. Seen em for $4k with under 150k miles, which pains me that we paid...more than that at the stealership but at least it was super clean...

Mine was also a very expensive dealership purchase, but I also will have it forever so it made sense to buy the cleanest, lowest mileage one I could. I'm on eight years of ownership now...paid it off first then started modding. I like it as much if not more now than I did when I bought it.

At this point for lift (edited 7/16/2014) I'm leaning toward Tundra Bilstein 5100's up front with my stock springs on the 5th perch, for now. Others have run this setup for a mild lift and liked it plenty without armor, etc. I don't plan to do heavy skids/bumpers any time soon anyway. Hell, there aren't even any rocks around here!

For the rear I already have Rough Country shocks (liked the compressed/extended measurements...and the price), so I'll be looking for a set of used 890s more than likely. Down the road I'll probably swap the stock fronts with TRDs (or wayyyyyy down the road: Eibach) and do the LC lift in the rear without stock cone bumps and with 99ish Blazer bee-hive frame bump-stops.

The 5100/OEM front and 890 rear should give me somewhere in the 3" range since I have the 2002 lowrider. I still need to measure that my roof rack will clear the garage, but if not I guess the Forester is going in there and I'm parking outside :(

That pic of the LBJs seems pretty fishy to me.. that bushing should be full and taunt in the joint.. get on those asap. I'm assuming you have a jack + stands, get the front end up and put a pry bar where the LBJ mount dips and the mount that the bolt goes through to check for play, there should be ZERO.

Very clean ride anyhow. I like your rack, is there an extension for it?

I didn't think you could see any of the LBJ in the above pics...They are of the Sway bar end links (top and bottom bushings), and tie rod ends

Did some "wheeling" this weekend. There's a road on the other side of town, out in the country, that's torn up and being re-done. Found some mud and a little area where they park some of the equipment and move dirt around. Didn't get out and take pics like you guys do, but my sons (7 and 11) both enjoyed it. Definitely going back soon.

I noticed the throttle was limited at times in 4H. I was in Drive, but I ran through a muddy spot and mashed it but didn't get the response I was wanting. Guessing it's the traction control crap? Would having it in 1st have helped any, or what can I do? I like to have control over the components, not let the computer handle it for me. My minivan used to do that trac control crap in the snow and it was annoying...trying to get out of a snow bank and I can't rev the motor. It had a button to turn it off, though.

how did you attach it? with the zip ties?

No, it's actually floating in mid-air, I sprinkled fairy dust on it

Yeah, with the zip ties. I'm not crazy about it, but I can always fab up the brackets later and snap those suckers off, though I was trying to think about logistically how to do that...

i don't have mine yet so i have time to think on where i want it and how.

It worked really well where I have it, and allows for shorter hoses, if you're wanting that. All I had to do was bend the horn bracket and use some extra split tubing and zip ties to keep the hoses where I wanted them, not rubbing, etc. I could have used the brackets to mount, but I had to run to get hose and fluid in the middle of the install (since I had forgot) and by the time I had it mocked-up where I wanted it, I wanted it over.

The worst part was taking the skid off.

will you email me pics of where and how you did yours? i am looking at getting a cooler from a ford that's pretty nice size and has factory brackets already on it.
which side is the pressure line?
