Took a long weekend and headed north up Highway 395 from SD. GF and I have a cabin near Bishop but got to take some fun trails and see some sites nearby. I absolutely love everything off the 395, offroading, fishing, camping, hiking. It's an outdoor playground with so much to explore. Here is a little of our last adventure:
Drove up Thursday night after work and found a little turn out in Alabama Hills. Woke up early to check out the sunrise and some arches. Drove Movie Road to Moffat Ranch Road back to the 395 and then continued north.
Went east out of Big Pine on the 168 to White Mountain Road to check out the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. The road is still closed 2 miles from the visitor's center. We found some forest roads to play on. It was a Friday morning so no one was around. A little snow in shady spots but nothing major.
Continued north to Bishop. Took highway 168 west and turned right on Forest Road 7S15 which loops to Buttermilk Road. Great views of the mountains, but still some good snow piles blocking the road about 4 miles in. All campgrounds in the area are closed but saw a good number of people disperse camping in the Buttermilks.
Highway 168 continues to Lake Sabrina, but is closed 2 miles from the lake. Hiked up to a stunning view of the frozen lake.
The next day we went to Benton Crossing Road east of the 395 to check out some hot springs. Lots of people cruising out after skiing, but in non-capable vehicles. A couple feet of snow still on the dirt roads keeping people away. Pulled a Jeep Wrangler out but didn't take any pics:becky:
Found a secluded/single hot tub with amazing views in every direction.
Also continued north to June Lake and hit the brewery. It was a gorgeous day, 60 degrees which was perfect in pants and t shirt. Great beer and vibes.
On our way back, we stopped at Fossil Falls just east of the 395. Quick and easy hike to an old lava water fall. Cool spot, and a BLM campground.
Such an awesome area to explore. Keep finding new stuff to visit every time. Looking forward to the summer and fishing opening April 29.
