Trouble turning on. 2015

So i was gone for 3 weeks and when i returned my 4runner did not want to turn on. It cranked over for around 10 seconds and did not turn on (No warning lights either). I did that for 3 cycles and finally it turned on. Backed it out of the driveway and when i switched it from Reverse to Drive it stalled and turned off. Took it to the dealership the following day for its 25k service and they could not duplicate the issue or find anything wrong with it. Drove it for 3 or 4 days with no problems until today. Had the same issue as a couple of days ago. This time i recorded it and hopefully that can help the mechanic trouble shoot it. Has anyone else experienced this before? Taking it back to the delaership tomorrow.

Where exactly do you live? Did the battery test good, are there any aftermarket alarms (Dealer installed or Customer installed?) Any modifications to the vehicle Is this a smart key or standard key?

What do you mean by "it cranked by did not turn on?" That sounds contradictory, if it turned on then you could crank the vehicle if it didn't how did it crank? Do you mean it cranked but didn't fire up? Also what warning lights weren't on? Not all of them will be on when you crank the vehicle as it's not needed after the "bulb check" phase of cycling the ignition.

Sorry, had to go there. I have no clue unless your fuel system is leaking down pressure somehow and needs a few seconds to build it back up. You say you took it to the dealer for 25k service. Can I assume it did finally start and run reliably enough for that trip?

Yes it cranked but did not fire up. No warning lights whatsoever were on.

After trying for some time to get it started it finally fired up. It was not like it had a dead battery either. It cranked over strong but never fired up. It drove perfectly fine after that.

Live in south texas. No alarm installed. Only mods are a lift. Don't know if its a smart key. How can i tell?

Your guess is as good as anyone's on the forum lol. Fuel or spark related most likely. Possibly shitty fuel. If it doesn't do it again I wouldn't worry about it.

Still sounds like a fuel flow problem to me. But I am clueless with a lot of the electronic controls on these newer engines. I believe the reference to a smart key is if you have a push button start capability. But again I could be wrong. All newer keys have a resistor (or circuit) built into them that is coded to the vehicle ECU. This way somebody can't just try another Toyota key in your vehicle. But if that was messed up I don't think yours would even engage the starter.
 
If you have a push button then you have a Smart Key system, if you have to physically put the key in the ignition you have a traditional system.

The Immobilizer will cut fuel in the event an unregistered key is used to start the vehicle, it will crank but not fire.

Do you know if the immobilizer light (the car with a lock icon) went out when you were cranking the vehicle?
 
Did you have any starting problems before this? If not, starting issues (if battery is good) are usually fuel delivery or electrical related. Take a good look around, over, under and inside the engine compartment. Look and check for loose wires, connections, tampering, etc. Check for evidence of animals and their damage. Inspect the air filter.

My 2 cents, you are a victim of corn. Yup, they put corn in everything these days including our fuel. Better known as ethonal. That black funk on the inside of your fuel door, dead corn. The fact that it sat for 3 weeks is the red flag. Dump a can of sea foam in your full tank and ride, repeat every 5-10k miles. I just did mine, truck loved it.

A wild guess: I think your fuel pump (or clogged fuel filter) maybe bad. Sounds like the engine is not getting the fuel needed to start the car. Next time when you have an issue, press the gas pedal while starting the car. It is just a wild guess.

Might have a point, where do you live and what's the ethanol content of the fuel around you? That stuff is government funded poison when it comes to non-flex fuel vehicles in high enough concentrations (hell it's just a crap fuel in general). If it's high enough concentration the vehicle might not like how it burns resulting in extended cranking until it gets the timing right.

I think it's 15% these days. It's a real pain in th ass if you have small motors like lawn equipment or boats. They have "rec" fuel at some stations but I just treat it with an enzyme killer.

Ethanol-free fuel is now available at some gas stations in the state of Florida. LOCATE E0 PURE-GAS.

The December 2011 bill, HB 4013 by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Destin, repealed the 2008 Florida law that requires gasoline to contain 9 to 10% ethanol. Gaetz stated that the corn-based biofuel causes problems in boats, lawn mowers and old cars, is an efficient net consumer of energy and a unfair government mandate.

He compared it to tacos. "Businesses particularly love stability when the government mandates that the public buy that business's products,'' he said. "If I sold tacos for a living, I would really like an environment where the government forced everyone to eat three tacos a day."
Evers also agreed to pull his bill (SB 238) back to continue to work on a compromise measure...Bill sponsor Sen. Greg Evers, R-Baker, said blended gasoline damages boat motors, and other engines, and said the requirement has been difficult for gas stations.
 
I doubt it has anything to do with ethanol blend... The 5th gen (and just about any modern car) is typically fine with it. It is more likely a loose connection somewhere or a simple matter of the fuel pump not acting 100% normal after sitting for a while.

Next time it happens.. (or just after it sits for a few days) Try to cycle the ignition on for a few seconds one or two times before attempting to start. This will give the pump enough time to bring up fuel pressure and purge the line. I think the system only allows for a short run cycle before cranking. If that does not build enough fuel pressure it may take one or two attempts.
