I found this thread while trying to figure out what is wrong my 2006 4Runner, 156,000 miles, runs like a dream when it is started and doesn't leak a drop of fluid. Stock except for 2 USB plugs wired into the cig lighter and well insulated. Sunroof motor went out about 2 months ago, so it is stuck shut.
About 6 weeks ago I was running errands and had gone about 30 miles, went into a store and when I came out, it did the same as in the video posted here. I tried it for about 10 tries, then called a tow truck. Went to lunch and met the truck about an hour later and it started like nothing happened. I was in a different car by then so had it towed to my trusty maintenance mechanic (who had previously removed an aftermarket alarm that made my horn alarm go off on occasion when I hit the brakes). Full scan showed no error codes.
A month later it did it again, and I drove it straight to the same shop when it finally started (about 20 minutes of trying with 2 original master keys that I have been carrying every day and both batteries are less than a year old from previous alarm issue). This time a scan showed an immobilizer key recognition code.
It has happened several more times in the 2 weeks since. Sometimes the little key symbol under the passenger airbag light goes off while starting, other times it doesn't. Local dealership had it for a full day and saw the same code, but said it shows up on almost every scan they do. They ran it for over an hour and started it in the neighborhood of 100 times and could not duplicate it. But it has happened to me since they had it. Seems to be undiagnosable, and it is frustrating and infuriating. I am the second owner and have taken excellent care with all maintenance, yet I can't rely on it all.
