Trouble with 33s

I just bought my 08 4runner sr5 a few months ago and decided I wanted bigger tires. The previous owner already had installed a toytech spacer lift in the front so I figured I would have no problems. When I measured the spacer it is about 3 inches tall. Im not sure if that translates to overall lift (I'm new to this). After checking a few places I settled on 285/70/17 Falken Rocky Mountain ATS tires paired with 17 wheels with a -6 offset. I was assured by the sales rep I should have no clearance issues. What I came to find when I installed the front 2 was that the tire rubbed on the inner black fender well plastics and caught the mud flap barely in the back. I adjusted the inner fender plastics on the right side but now I only have about 1/8 inch of clearance between that and the tire when the wheels turned. The left side is an even bigger issue. I'd appreciate any help you guys can give since again, I am new to this and I'm pretty frustrated with these tires after a full day wasted so far. Thanks

My guess is you have the 3" toytec spacer up in the front from what you said (didn't say anything about the back). It is very common that you might actually have to cut the inner liner and take your front mud flaps off trying to fit 285's especially with a spacer lift. You get what you get with those in lift height and gotta work around it.

If your one of those guys who cant take the knife/saw to your baby well your pretty much stuck then and are gonna rub guaranteed in different situations

I literally much have no liner left on either side and what is left is pulled way back and zip tied, removed mud flaps, even took a big notch out of the body on the inner wall where it bolts on so I have no clearance issues. 6" lift 35's


I would not go that extreme for 285's but just a suggestion to cure your problems:hatsoff:

thanks. ive also heard these 285s are going to mess with my speedo and mpg. is this true? id obviously buy a speedo healer if so

Yes. Your speedometer is going to be off. Therefore your mileage will be off as well. I went from 265/65/17 (4th gen factory size if you have 17's) to 265/70/17 and my speedometer shows about 6% slower than how fast I'm actually going. I measured with a GPS. I imagine your tires will be more drastic then what I'm experiencing.

The tires Im running are in my sig and they make my speedo read about 3mph (5%) slower than what Im actually going at freeway speeds, around town its negligble. Ironically, the larger tires actually made the onboard mpg calculator accurate to within .3 mph from hand calculated. Before, it was pretty much worthless.

this is about how much difference from stock the speedo will be off with 285's, 265/65-R17 vs 285/70-R17 Tire Comparison - Tire Size Calculator not to sound like a nannie, but since running larger than stock tires may involve several things like, trimming, wheel spacers, a possible body mount chop, uca, etc. a smart thing to do would of been a little more research before running out & buying larger tires, even if you are new to it.
