truck shakes while at a stop in gear (auto tranny)

Hi,
I have a 4 cylinder 96 4Runner with automatic tranny. When at a stop and in Drive, 1st or 2nd gear the truck shakes. When I put the truck into neutral or park the shaking, vibrating stops. Any ideas what the problem could be? Bye the way, the car does not shake or vibrate when moving in gear, only at a stop.

What does it idle(RPM's) at when stoped in gear?

I think your idle is low.

It could either be your idle, or I had a cavaleir that would do it, Come to find out that it needed new engine mounts. I would check into both, neither are good for you 4runner

Mine needed an exhaust valve adjustment $$$, only running on 5 cylinders. Definitely needs to go to the shop either way.

If it's OK in Neutral and it's not an engine problem as in the above responses, it may be the torque converter.

The converter provides the "slippage" needed to keep the engine from stalling out when an auto trans is in gear and stopped.

With a manual trans you put it in Neutral to stop the engine from stalling.
