Is it pretty easy for someone to get into the trunk of 4runner ? or into 4runner in general? It does look pretty easy to me , especially if they know what they doing. My other car does not have keyhole on the trunk door and I can disable it so the trunk will only open by pressing truck button on key fob.. Anyone know if there is even a way to disable that back door access :tape: )) on the 4runner??

They only thing you can do, is to not make visible anything worth stealing. Thieves will just break a window and grab what they see.

True but sometimes they'll just try to get in without even seen whats inside.

You could open up the rear hatch panel and disconnect the key cylinder. That should disable it, but like flyrv9 said, can't really stop smash and grab thieves. Maybe glass break sensor tied to OEM, or aftermarket alarm may scare them away, but you'll still have a broken window
 
OP not sure where you live, but I agree with [MENTION=90148]flyrv9[/MENTION]

I made the mistake of leaving visible a 12mm ratcheting end wrench and 2 car wash tokens in my front console area. Dude went through the entire 1st and second row area but never even looked or touched the cargo area.

Installing a decent alarm system and hiding/locking everything down that you can has been a great deterrent fwiw.

Lift/tires/tint all help with outside viewing angle.

Get a dark or black blanket, with flat color and texture so as not to reflect light in the folds to put over anything laying back there. Even with the tonneau cover.

If you want to avoid modus operandi for smash and grab, then don't pique interest.

If you're worried about someone taking the time to drill, punch out, or pick the assembly, then you have other issues and need to find secured parking areas with surveillance and security.

I'm confused by your goal though, are you concerned about someone picking the lock?

So you dont have a keyhole on the trunk. Im guessing you have the smart key system? With the up and down button? It won't roll up and down unless you have the smart key in your pocket and near the vehicle. A random stranger cannot simply push your buttons to roll windows up and down without the smart key near the car. Same with popping open the hatch. You can only do so when your smart key is near.

if you dont have a smart key then i have no frigging idea what youre talking about.

Exactly, the less locks the better! yes they can still smash the glass but I think most cases are they quietly picking the locks and rear hatch on 4runner is the best access IMO especially if you backing up somewhere. I guess disabling the lock on the rear hatch is the only solution since no one care about the alarm going off anymore.

A trunk with no keyhole that only unlocks when you either press release button on the driver side or when you press unlock button on the key itself. And you can disable the driver side button by pressing hidden little switch in glove compartment so pretty much trunk unlocks only with a key. Now Im looking at 4runner and thinking of ways to disable/disconnect that huge keyhole on the trunk door and maybe even driver/passenger doors.
I had someone getting into my trunk a long time ago without smashing windows but by simply picking the lock on the trunk. Now I see those locks on the trunks and first thing I want to do is disable them :dammit:

my house was broken in to once, but I still maintain a normal lifestyle and use doors and locks.

What on earth are you carrying around that has your vehicle in the crosshairs of the ocean's 11 crew?

Yes, but some key locks are so easy to crack by simply using a screwdriver and wrecking the whole thing until it opens. That's why I was wondering how well is 4runners key locks made and stuff.

haha sure but I would at least get a better locks after that and security system of some sort. I think cars a little different though when it comes down to theft.
 
Why would a thief pick/punch out a lock in the rear gate and climb through the inside when they can just do that to the drivers door?
 
Car thief deterence

The best defense is not to leave anything of value in the car. I have blankets, jumper cables, a cloth bag full of line, gloves and hats and a jug of water in the car all the time. I keep most of this worthless junk under a gray/black wool blanket I bought for $10. It covers and hides a pile of stuff in the back that might otherwise look inviting to thieves.

It's not the junk they steal that will cost you, it's the broken window that you'll have to replace immediately if it ever happens to you.

have you tried welding it shut?
 
I dont really get it. I love the fact that the rear has a keyhole. I can't tell you how many times I have forgotten to roll up the rear window and the rear keyhole is just and awesome solution. I also love it when I have my kayaks fully tied down and cannot lift my tailgate, then I just drop the window and stuff more in the trunk. I do have the cargo cover to help hide my tools. So for me the rear keyhole is a cool feature not a problem. :shrug:
