TSB question about 2011 tranny...

just purchased a used 4runner with 37k miles. I've read about the transmission shudder issue. My question is this...Even though I have not notice the shudder from my tranny, is it feasible to take it to the dealer and have them replace it under the TSB? I know I have a little while before my warranty expires, but if this is a known problem and the fix is to replace the entire tranny, I'm afraid to wait, and as soon as my warranty expires, the tranny will start shuddering and then I'm SOL. I'm a little gun shy right now because my tranny crapped out on my Saturn Outlook (which has a crappy tranny), which is the reason I'm in a 4Runner. Traded that Saturn for my 4runner. Now I find out about the tranny problems on these 4runners.

Just because some are experiencing this doesnt mean everyone is going to..Have you confirmed your VIN is within the range of the TSB? Besides this would be covered under the 5yr/60K powertrain warranty so you have at least 23K miles left on that. Also if it does happen they give you a new 4runner instead of replacing the tranny.

You have to be careful with what you read on the internet.

can anyone provide a link to the affected VINs? I'm not sure if my VIN is on the list. I'm "gun shy" right now. Had to replace a tranny on my Saturn and it was 11k miles passed warranty period. That's my reason for posting this topic, because I just purchased my 4runner and now I find out about this tranny problem.

Unless you have the symptoms described in the TSB and the vehicle falls within the VIN range Toyota will not warranty the Transmission, in fact even if you had the symptoms it won't be as easy as "hey my tranny shudders, there's a TSB can I get it replaced?" TAS will have to be called up, possibly even a Toyota FST will have to come by and verify it; this is of course assuming they don't reject the claim at any point in the process.

Do you happen to know what the TSB number is? I can probably see if I can hunt down a .pdf of it.

Booked mine in to have the trans checked out as well as the seat back TSB. We'll see what happens. I'm not expecting anything to come of this but we'll see.

Any update, or anyone else had this fixed?

Hi, I'm having the same issue and was wondering how this was resolved for you.

2011 Limited, 106K, ~30 mph on acceleration feels like running over a rumble strip, again ~40 or 45mph. If I switch into Sport mode, the issues stops. Seems to have just showed up with the cold weather.

From what I can tell my VIN falls within the TSB (comes before C5084131 I assume since mine is ...B507XXXX) and the trasmission (5AT) and VDS (BU5JR) match.

Anyone successfully had this repaired under the TSB for free while being outside of the standard Toyota warranty? I bought this used about a year ago but most of the success stories I see online involve transmisison under 60K or 70K.

Thanks. Hoping not to ask Santa for a Transmission.

I've had the 1-2 shift shudder with light acceleration on my 2010 ever since buying it in 2014 with 60k miles. I'm at 115k now and it hasn't gotten worse. If you're getting a rumble strip type shudder at 40-45 that's a whole other issue...maybe related to the torque converter. I plan to take this TSB into the dealership next time I go as I had them document the issue back in 2014 after I bought it. If I can get a free new transmission, great, otherwise it seems like a known issue with the early gens that hasn't evolved into transmission failures....I think its just a quirk of the programming.
