Tundra 5100s vs 4Runner 5100s (Sorry, yes another thread)

Hey everyone.

I did some research and am getting mixed answers on the topic. I'm pretty close to purchasing lift stuff to replace my worn out 150,000 mile suspension, and have decided on OME 881s/890s with 5100s. What I haven't decided is if I want to run the 4Runner 5100s or the Tundra 5100s.

I know the Tundra 5100s fit, but do they require any modification to the shock itself to be bolted to the 4Runner? Some people are saying they bolt right up, and then I have gotten other answers that the lower bushings on the rear shocks need to be replaced. The top hats don't matter as I planned on replacing them with new ones regardless, but will 4Runner top hats bolt up to the Tundra 5100s or no?

You do need to change the bushings for them in the back. I had to do that when I bought Tundra ones. 4Runner one's obviously you do not need to.
 
Bilstein also wont warranty the shock if you use a tundra part on a 4runner. It happened to a member on here, just something to think about if you do have an issue with them.
 
My Tundra 5100's came with the correct bushings. I guess if you but a lift kit for a 3rd gen they come correct.
 
The "front" tundra 5100 bolt right up. No modification needed. However, the "rear" tundra 5100 do not bolt directly up. Due to because the factory rear tundra 5100 have 1/2"eye and our 4Runner is 3/4" eye. So simply replacing the eye bushing fixes this issue. But FJ cruiser rear shocks so bolt up directly. Most people run either FJ cruiser rear shock, AKA long travel Bilstein 5100 or something else.

If I was calling in to get my tundra shocks warranted, I would definitely not tell them that it was on a 4Runner just to avoid BS. But most vendors you purchase from will probably help you out.
 
My issue with the 4Runner 5100s is that the rear shocks are only rated for up to 2" of lift, and I'm buying 890s which are around 2.5-3" if I remember right. Would the FJ rear 5100s allow for a larger rear lift?

FJ rear shocks or 4th gen or 5th gen <== don't remember exactly which 4Runner gen. Will be perfect for 3" or more. Toytec used to recommend the Bilstein 5100 for their rear superflex Coils. Which are rated for 3.75" of lift. And if you actually take that part number. They are FJ shocks or 4th gen or 5th gen 4Runner. But I would only get those shocks if you are going 3"+ other wise check lift info thread for more info. Or call Toytec.

SS uses BIL 33-187174 (FJ/4th gen rear) as option with his 890 lift kit. When I was in the process of buying my lift kit from Toytec, they said their bilstein long travel (BIL 33-187174) would be fine with the 890s but they had a disclaimer on their site stating it was best to use it with their superflex coils. I haven't seen those shocks offered on their site the last time I checked. My friend has my old 890s paired the toytecs long travel blisteins and hasn't had any issues since they were installed about 2 years ago. I checked Wheeler's and the Tundra rear bilstein compressed and extended shock length seemed a little shorter than the FJs if the length was a concern.

I just saw in you sig that you have the 7.2 with 8 wraps. If you got them from SS then I think you may have the FJ /4th gen rear bilsteins (BIL 33-187174).

Maybe you're right. My 7.2 kit is from 2014 & came with the OME 890's. I bought it from the classifieds cheap from a guy who wrecked his truck & never got the chance to install it. I sold the 890's & bought used 8 wraps because I'm adding a rear plate bumper w/swingout someday! LOL

Otherwise I would have bought the 1.2 kit.

I recently did a 2" on my 01' using tundra TRD SPRINGS paired with 5100's up front, OME 906's with t4r 5100 in rear, ride is awesome and it's all the lift you need. Look up speedy's garage on YouTube .

I would do 906s, but from everything I've read, they ride a little harsher and don't sit up as high as 890s. I don't want to be dealing with reverse rake.

They don't offer those shocks anymore because they made their own boss rear shock.

Toytec rear boss shocks that are recommended with Toytec superflex Coils are:
24" extended
16.5" collapsed

So I'd assume the Bilstein 5100 are same give or take

But there is no specific 5100. And don't get confused with front or the rear.

I have not seen Bilstein make at specific shocks for 3rd gen 4Runner. Only for Tacoma or newer 4Runner. That's why many run other truck shocks. Or different brand.

Yes, there is a 3rd gen specific 5100, as referenced below. Taco 5100s have 3 settings, tundra 5100 has 5, and the 4Runner 5100 has 4. It is specifically made and valved for the 3rd gen.
