Tundra brake upgrade question

I'm thinking about doing the Tundra brake upgrade to my 01 4runner. I found a set of calipers off a 00 tundra that supposedly are the 231mm 13WL for $90 a pair and $40 for the pair of rotors. They said this truck only had 50K miles on it which I find hard to believe. Do you guys think these prices are a good deal?
Also I have the stock 5 spoke 16in wheels and wondering if I would have to replace them doing this upgrade.

Hey kurt, sorry I didn't answer last night, it was family night. That sounds like it should be fine. I would probably just go ahead and get new pads at least if not rotors too. The calipers should be fine as long as there arent' signs of brake fluid leaking out anywhere. Also, your wheels will be fine its just the older 16" split 3 spoke (or 6 spoke depending on the person) wheels that you have to shave down. 15" wheels are just out of the question all-round. As long as everything is in good working order that's definitely a steal!

No worries about the call back. I was thinking if the rotors looked in good shape and still had plenty of thickness then I could just get them turned and they'd be good to go with a new set of brake pads. If the rotors truly only have 50k miles on them I would think they've never even been turned once.
 
sounds like a sweet deal to me! i'd pull the trigger, and i'm more than happy to help on the install. probably just tackle that when we do the bumper.


speaking of bumper, i found a powder coater that quoted me $220 for front and rear bumpers with a color match to my cladding. i'm going to have him do my rollbar to see the quality first, but i can get you his number if your interested.

Yes I'd be very interested in his number (text it to me when you have a min) as it sounds like he would have better prices than I'm getting quoted which are around $200 for the front bumper. Have you seen his work?

Thats actually why i brought it up, i remembered the quotes were pretty steep. I have not seen his work yet, but once I finish my rollbar i'll have him coat it just as a trial run to see his work quality. I'm at work right now and have no cell signal, i'll just shoot you a pm, not sure i really want to blow this guy up with buisness yet until i see his work quality first hand.
 
For $90 I would jump all over those calipers. Personally I'd put new rotors and pads on, but it's up to you.

Either way, the Tundra brake upgrade is awesome.

I would get on and read the change thread that was posted. I don't think that the 231mm calipers will fit with the stock rims. I did this upgrade and love it but I didn't have stock rims. Also definitely get new rotors. They are cheap. Just my $.02.
 
Thanks for bringing that back up as it's a very valid concern I have. However it does appear they will clear on these per the first page on that link

will fit with the 13wl is how I read that on page one BigFishAllDay hard to find specs info. And these are the same rims I'm running on my 01 the flower

And I agree the best choice would be for new rotors but IF I can get some for $20 a pair and they have only 50k miles on them. I would think on turning done on them will bring them back to almost stock specs. But I could be wrong. But can't hurt to try them at the $40 price he's wanting for the paired rotors off the same 2000 tundra that the calipers are on that I'm going to get tomorrow afternoon.

Yeah, if you have any issue with the caliper fitting, it is against the spokes, not the wall of the rim, so I would just read what the required spacing is, I know the creator of the thread measured it, and stick a tape back there to get a quick measurement. Other than that you should be good. It has been hands down the best mod I have done to my 4runner thus far.

Also, I know I got my rotors for like $50 at Autozone, just in case you change your mind.
