Tundra Front Brake Mod question

So I am getting ready to do the Tundra Front Brake mod to my 99 2WD and I have some questions. I have decided to go with the 199mm.

1. Autozone reman calipers - anyone have any problems with them?
2. Rotors and Pads - Should I go OEM or aftermarket. The Toyota dealership in Phoenix has the rotors for $57 and pads for $56.

I just did the same thing - I ended up with the calipers AutoZone, the pads from Advance (ThermoQuiet) and the rotors from NAPA. Everything has been great so far (few months) and I THINK I have better stopping power. It's not as scary as it was before, though. I have much more confidence in the brakes.

my question also is why the 199? Spend the extra money and do the 231mm. I don't know how the 199 are going to treat you or how much it is going to cost but I love my 231. I paid 65 for a used set of calipers from the junkyard. 20 dollars to get them sandblasted. 8 dollars for spray can. 25 dollar for reman kit. 50 dollar for a new set of rotor. 35 bucks for some brake pads. Best 200 dollar I have spent on my car.

I also went with the 231, but paid 66.85 for each. the were re-manufactured.

I did 199s on my 97 using all OEM parts except the calipers where I used the Napa Eclipse calipers. I received advice that the earlier 3rd gens 96-98 master cylinder wasn't really up to the larger calipers like the 99-02 later3rd gens. Regardless I've been very happy with mine so far.

Since I have the split 3 spoke 16" wheels I didn't want to grind my wheels. I thought about using a 1/4 inch wheel spacers.

Is anyone using the spacers and what's your thoughts?

I just did the 199mm due to the three spoke as well and decided not to do the spacers because it is hard enough to keep ball joints on this thing. I wasn't ready to go through them faster or end up being the next guy with a 3rd Gen that shears one and totals out the truck.

I got every thing from Autozone and so far they are working out great and if you time it right you can do it for under 300.00 with coupons. I meant to take some photos of the castings, but for the record the rotors were over all nicer looking than the Brembo's that I was replacing them with.

If you do buy your pads there make sure you double check the pads, they are bad about giving you the 231mm pads.

Lift spacers that go on top of the coil are what cause wear and tear on the ball joints. Not wheel spacers. There is no proof anywhere saying a wheel spacer will cause more ball joint failure.

it moves the tire out further, putting more pressure/stress on the suspension. how much more stress, and if its enough to actually cause premature failure is another question.

I would agree that lift spacers cause additional wear, but disagree that wheel spacers won't.

Any change to the geometry of the suspension setup will add pressure to the moving parts and will help cause premature wear.

100% sure that they do fit - buddy of mine has these wheels with the 231mm.

Thanks guys for your help. I found the "everything you need..." site earlier, so I went out and picked up the wheels. $180 for all 4.

Can't wait til this weekend. Tundra Brake Mod and U Joint Replacement.

You won't regret it. It's awesome how quickly and smoothly you'll stop after doing the mod.

Finished my swap to the 199 using Napa parts. Cost me right about $300 (I also put new brake lines). I also did the 199 because I have the tri spoke and didn't want to deal with swapping wheels.
