Tundra / LC vs Tundra / OME Suspension Upgrade

bah, i thought i was fairly well settled on what i was going to do for my lift until i read through **Rickashay's OME vs. TRD Tundra/LC Review** now i don't know what im going to do!

I'm running the TRD tundra YY/BY coils with tundra 5100 Billies in front with LC 8 wrap coils in rear. It rides like stock on the road and flexes Nice when wheeled. The PO installed ADDCO sway bars, which I'm still running even when wheeled. Still flexes Nice, but not stuffed. My next wheeling trip I will try to take it off and see the difference in flex

How would the flex on say, the 906's compare with the flex of the LC 7.5-wraps on the trail?

I'm not trying to open a bag of worms and pit you guys against each other...we can all be friends :hippie:

Found a pair of 890's and 891's on FB, but wouldn't that be rather high?? I have 265/75/16's right now, and will keep them for quite some time. Also found a set of 8-coil LC shocks but according to this thread: (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/66976-3rd-gen-4runner-lift-information-faqs.html) the 8-coil LC shocks will get me about 4" of lift, whereas the 890 / 891 will get me about 3". Anyone verify this?

The coils you run in the rear is as to it's own. It's what type of wheeling you do and how much weight you are going to carry when exploring.

Do you have a picture of your 4runner? I am trying to see if the LC 8-wraps are "too much" height with the 265/75/16's. I found a pair of them for $75 + shipping, and was considering it..

Also found OME 890's for $100 locally. I don't know. Decisions decisions.

I went back and forth on this when I was choosing a lift as well. I heard that the OME stuff was really stiff and didn't ride as well on the roads. I DD my runner, but also get it off road as much as I can, so I needed something that fit the amount of road driving I do, because who wants to be uncomfortable the entire way to a trail, especially if you're driving 2 or more hours to the trail every time. I love my LC coils. They're super comfortable and very flexy and I don't have to worry about sag because I never have that much weight in the back. I went the cheap way on shocks and went with Skyjacker Nitro 8000s for a LC. They're alright, they don't limit flex, and they keep it sable on the roads even with no sway bars. If i were to do it again I would have just went ahaed and dropped some more cash for Billies instead, because right now the Skyjackers are just a little stiff for me on the bumps, but if i get some weight in the back they may do a little better. Up front I did the Tundra 5100's and the Toytec/Ebaich 650lb coils. Only problem I've had with them is that I set them a perch too high and they have too much preload. But other than that I love my set up.

What i would recommend for you if you don't want too much lift becuase you're staying with the 265's, is to go with the LC 7 wraps with your choice of shock in the rear, with the Tundra/TRD coils on Billie 5100 's. That will give you not too much height in the rear, but still plenty of flex for off road, along with the on-road manners that you want, and the 5100's have multiple perch settings so you can raise/lower the front to get the right height and not too much rake. I think you'll be fine with the 265's for now, and you should still have the room and lift to get some 285's in there when the time comes.

Hope that helped!

Thank you very much for the advice. I actually did find a thread where people showed their lifts with the 265/75's specifically, and I agree with you that the 8-coil LC shocks looked just a TAD too high for my liking. I think the 7's would sit perfect. However, where did you find yours?? Can you buy them new? I would hate to do that, but I did call a guy with the 8-coils earlier and he said that the 7-coils were only found on 1991-1992 I believe, because it was a different setup (engine / tranny-wise). He said that they rarely come across these.

7.5 wrap LC coils would be the shortest I could find, correct?

As of now:
Bilstein Tundra 5100's all-around (adjustable in front)
Tundra Front Springs
LC 7.5 wrap rears

Do you know how much (if any) I will have to modify to get the Tundra rear shocks in? I know the front requires some grinding away, so the coils don't rub, and reusing my 4runner top hats, but other than that I should be good, right?

Or was there something else about a .75" bushing for the fronts?

I got mine at Crusierparts.net but they were priced a little too high in my opinion, but the upside is that you can request 7 wraps and they get them to you, and they even ask want condition you want. I'm sure you could buy them new from somewhere, but you'll most likely be paying a good deal more than you would used. I've also heard to check ih8mud, a cruiser forum for them and you can get them cheap, but it could be a waiting game trying to find them.

Color codes on the LC coils...
21" Blue Pink White 9.25 wraps
21" Grey Orange White 9.25 wraps
20.25" Blue Yellow White 8.75 wraps-one of these is a confirmed LX450
19.5" Green Yellow White 8.25 wraps-one of these is a confirmed LX450
19.5" Purple Green White 8 wraps
19.25" Double Purple Dark Blue White 8 wraps
19" Double Pink Light Blue White 7.5 wraps
18.5" Double Pink Grey White 7.5 wraps
18 7/8" Orange Orange White 7.75 wraps

For the front tundra struts I didn't have to change the bushing, but I've heard some do, so don't quote me on that. (In hindsight, I did say in my order that they were going in a 4runner, so they could have changed them out, but I don't know) You will have to re-use the stock tophat, and you may have to do some slight grinding to clear the coils, but from what I've read it's kind of vehicle to vehicle and how the coils are rotated.

For the rear 5100s, I though most people got them to fit a LC, but I could be wrong. In kits like Toytec's, the shocks are eye-to-eye, other than eye-to-stud like out 4runners have. My shocks are shocks for a LC, and they are eye-stud, so I didn't have to modify, but it just depends on the shock from what I know. LC shocks are eye-stud, so no modifications except some may need new/bigger/smaller centering washers. Other shocks, that are eye-eye will need an adapter to work.

I just emailed them and will wait to hear back. Also have my eyes open on IH8Mud, Pirate4x4, and YotaTech (as well as here). Not looking to wait too long..really want to get the ball rolling and get this thing happening!

Thanks for the help =)

The front is only on the 2nd perch from bottom because I have no weight in front yet. When I throw the winch and bumper I will be moving it up on the middle 3rd perch.

The rear is empty in the pictures and when going into the mountain, drops down and inch or more depending how much gear is in the back.

In the pictures I am running 16x8 LX450 rims on 265/70R16 a/t tires. In the mountain I run 16x8 fzj80 rims on 265/70R16 Toyo M/Ts

Wheelers has the front tundra 5100s listed under the 3rd gen 4runner section. For rear shocks there are a couple of members running 4th gen 4runner shocks. I have been looking at fox 980 24 674 to match up with my tundra trd coil/5100 front and LC 8 wraps in the rear. At this point i am trying to fund out the bottom shock bushing size of these foxes. The compressed and extended lengths are 14.35 & 22.45 respectively, so pretty close to tundra 5100s but a higher quality shock (maybe).

So I think I nabbed a pair of 7.5's today, finally (and locally!).

Can anyone confirm?

One LOOKS color-coded double pink light blue white (the one on the left)

The right side - only thing showing was the one pink top color.

That is pink right (and light blue)?

So these are 7.5's?

21" Grey Orange White 9.25 wraps
20.25" Blue Yellow White 8.75 wraps-one of these is a confirmed LX450

19.5" Purple Green White 8 wraps

19" Double Pink Light Blue White 7.5 wraps
18.5" Double Pink Grey White 7.5 wraps
18 7/8" Orange Orange White 7.75 wraps
