two different types of 4wd shifters.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the two types? I am looking at trucks from 99-02. Is it a different 4wd system? One has AWD?

I like this body style and the new 5th Gen. The 4th is just not an option for me.
I like the idea of spending 20k less on the 3rd Gen. I'm not knocking the new one. I rented one for a week and didn't want to give it back

I just looked at a 2000 that has the J lever and also has the 4WD push button. It also has the button for the center lock unlock i believe.

that maybe a sweet one with the multi-mode case and rear diff lock, is the push button center lock say "rr diff" on it?


if so that is actually a factory rear e-locker in there and another highly sought after option.

Yes, 1999 and 2000 Limited's still had a "J" style shifter, because they have 2Hi, 4Hi, 4HiL (locked) and then 4Lo. Moving from 4Hi to 4HiL requires pulling the transfer case lever. Just going from 2Hi to 4Hi uses the push button on the shifter, but no actual movement of the lever itself.

The button on the left side is for the rear differential, not the center.

if it's clean and has good miles jump on it, best options available for 4wd in this generation of 4runner imo.

Thanks, what i am looking for cause that is what i have in my Montero now.
I would rather have the factory rear locker instead of installing one.
