Two weeks ago dealer hacked off gas pedal, now replacing.

At the dealer for my HG issue two weeks ago and they told me about the recall. I told them that was the reason I stopped going to the dealer as I didn't want the pedal hacked off. It was hacked even after I signed a release.

Complained to the Service Manager and he agreed to replace the pedal. At the dealer now so we'll see what happens.

The pedal recall is COMPLETE BS. I've been to two Toyota dealers where I was fronted with the recall notice. Both times the service manager came up to me to talk about the recall. I told both of them, "look, you know and i know that the recall is pure bullsh*t. Leave my pedal alone". Again, both times I had to sign a waiver. Whatever. Surprisingly, my parents Lexus dealer is much "cooler" about it. The service guy informs us of the recall and we (I) tell them to leave the pedal alone. Nothing to sign.

Can't believe they were able to do that. Mine got cut and I didn't want the cut edges since I tend to take off my flip flops while driving during the summer. They put in a new pedal that has finished edges but it's still much shorter than it used to be. I'm not a fan of the short pedals.

You're kidding me? Toyota's solution to the recall was to simply saw the pedal to a shorter length and leave it? That is absurd! I need to check my pedal to see if it has been hacked.

I was very firm with the service manager when he called me to say they cut my pedal by accident (apparently there was a miscommunication between him and the service tech). Basically, I said that I would not accept anything other than the original style pedal, whether it was a new replacement or something from a junkyard.

He said that he had his parts guy order the pedal using the old part number, and for some reason it worked--even though Toyota supposedly pulled this part from the market. I had to drive around with the shorter, cut pedal while waiting for the new one to come in. I was very happy to have a longer pedal again.

I'm not usually a fan of dealerships--that was the first time I have ever had my 4Runner serviced at one (trans. fluid exchange). But in all fairness, the service manager made a significant effort to right his mistake, so I have to give him and the dealership credit (Norm Wagner Toyota in Lancaster, MA). They could have told me to f-off.

I wonder how they did that. Those parts a pulled right away and there are huge legal liabilities for dealers putting them on.

I was told that he removed the work order for the recall from the computer system and would still receive recall notices from Toyota. My guess is that he ordered the part and did the work off the books.

Anyhow...

Honestly, I don't get the big uproar over the pedal being cut. I took mine to the dealer, they cut the pedal. My 4Runner still drives like a 4Runner and looks and acts like a 4Runner. The pedal felt different for a day or so, but then I was used to it and not don't even realize it is changed.

I think a lot of people on here are hyper-sensitive to things being do to their vehicles. The pedal cut wasn't a big deal to me.

It's a big deal to me. Foot keeps slipping off...
They cut mine, unauthorized, when I went in for A/C work.
I'd fix it back if I had the part and know - how

I might be hypersensitive, or I might just prefer a larger pedal so I don't have to cram my size 13 steel toes further into the footwell to be able to press the gas every day.

Given the fact that my pedal was cut even though I specifically instructed the dealership to NOT cut it, I don't think my desire for the original pedal was unreasonable.

Unfortunately this recall was Toyota's overreaction due to "stupid people" stacking layers of floor mats on top of each other causing interference with the gas pedal. I don't fall in that category and always swap my mats summer/winter and therefore didn't want "MY" pedal cut.

I had the toyota all weather rubber mats and one of my little clip things was missing and i have had the pedal get caught...so it isn't BS at all. But you just pull the mat back and all is well. The recall is also an ECU reprogram...so if the brake is touched while accelerating it will stop accelerating altogether until the brake is released. So, it's a pedal chop and an ecu reprogram.

if you havent done this and are planning on haveing it done. i believe you can request toyota to replace the pedal with a shorter pedal assy instead of having them hack up your old one.

My size 13's hate the chopped pedal and I find I'm constantly moving my foot to get a better position on it. It's one of the very few complaints I have about my truck!

I don't recall seeing anything about the ECU re-program in the recall notice (I got it a long time ago, will have to try and find it). Have others also had the ECU re-programmed for this recall?

I'd like to get the re-program done, but not the hacked pedal.

I heard of them installing a "smart pedal" I'm not sure if the pedal is actually different and has a switch/sensor on it or if it's just an ECU tweak. A lot of other newer vehicles have this, my Audi had this and it made it impossible to stall up my engine at the track when racing(my dumb ass fault for buying an auto) because one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake overrode each other.

I'm sorry to hear that they cut your pedal without your consent. The job is easy money for technicans and dealerships, but it is still a repair authorized by the customer, factory recall or not.

That's why they give us waivers to sign releasing liability when we refuse to get them cut. Honestly, if it wouldn't emd up being so much trouble over a pedal I'd encourage anyone and everyone who has had their pedal cut without consent or against their wishes after explicitly stating so complain to Toyota HQ or the BAR. The dealership has performed a repair without authorization and they are liable for the resulting complaints and litigation.

Not every model has a ECU update, I don't think the 4Runners got one.

I can tell you that i've heard that they cut the pedal as the first option. If the customer is not ok with it, they replace the pedal.

Also, keep in mind the tech and the service writer get paid each time as 2 separate service tickets. Luckily I knew someone in service and the cut my pedal and then did the replacement in the same day.
