txbonds 15 4Runner Trail Edition thread

Two things.

First, anyone know what this cover in the drivers rear wheel well is covering? Mine is rattling around slightly loose when driving and is driving me crazy.

And almost forgot to install the final piece of lift install, the ball joint covers

That cover protects the fuel filler tube and associated venting from road debris kicked up by the tire. It's also a good place to extend the rear differential and e-locker breather tubes.

Thanks. I'll have to check it a little more when I have time to see why it's loose. Maybe the plastic snap rivet deals are not all the way in or maybe the loose one needs replacement for some reason.

In response to a request for some more pictures once I had it out of the garage, here are a few in a little better light.

Put the stock front skids back on. That Shrockworks stuff is not going to show up for a long time.

I will. Want to change the oil first. Will go do that on Monday since the first 5 are covered by Toyota and then will get the skid back on.

Only 2, the recommended oil change intervals by Toyota under Toyota Care are 10K. I was surprised first time I took it in a 5K and all they really did was rotate the tires and check the fluid levels.

Wow, well screw that. I'll go get the stuff and change it out myself then. Not worth the hassle of dealing with them anyway for just oil changes. Could swear they told me the first 5 service visits were covered though. Oh well. Thanks.

It is 5 but these things use Synthetic 0-20. I have done all my own oil changes, that way you see what comes out. The mileage limit is lower then the 5 will allow.

10-4 and same reason I'd rather just do my own. Realizing the oil may be okay I will go ahead and change out at least the oil and rear diff fluid to remove any break-in gunk.

Spent some time with the heat gun trying to get the front mud flaps to clear my tires when turning in reverse. Made some improvement but it is still catching a little. This is only happening when in reverse at or near full lock when on a hill and off camber. I did pull the front fender liner forward a bit also but this will get corrected when my shrockworks front bumper shows up.

You can see the small spot it was rubbing on the front liners

This is the passenger mud flap and you can see all the rub marks here

And here is the drivers side mud flap at full lock. You can see how it touches just slightly

I need to work on them some more as I don't want to take them off all together if I can help it. Once I get them a little better clearanced I'll post some pictures of the finished produc.

Also ordered a rear bumper yesterday. I probably spent the most time of all the components I've ordered trying to decide on a rear bumper. Of all the ones I've seen, I really liked the CBI model due to the lines and the built in light openings.

The second part of the decision that I struggled with is whether to get a rear tire swing. I really, really, really like the look and functionality the swing offers, but I really, really, really, really hated the tire swing in day to day use. It is a total pain in the rear to have to open it every time you want to access the cargo area. Also, I didn't want to block the rear camera and have to mess with running another one somehow.

So, I ordered the CBI 5th gen rear bumper without a tire swing. I'm really hoping I don't regret it down the road but I know every time I'm reaching for the back gate I'll be reminded of why I chose to omit the swing this go round.

Order it with the tire carrier and only put it on when you are wheeling. Order a 'blank' piece of tube to cover the swinging spindle to keep it from corroding.

I thought about that but figured it would be a pain to relocate the spare, the tag, the tag lighting, etc each time. Not sure what I would gain by having it other than coolness factor and maybe an easier reach to a spare tire depending on terrain at the time of need. The only other thing is possibly the rear table option would be nice. For extra fuel I was thinking of using rotopax on the roof rack.

I don't know maybe I'll call Nathan today to discuss to see what the options are for an easy on and off swing and a cover.

Drove truck 250 miles round trip to our lake house to pick up my tandem axle trailer to haul my Mule around on. Truck pulled like a champ but gas mileage sucked with trailer, in 4th gear and lots of winter wind and temp. Averaged 15mpg heading up without trailer and 12.5mpg heading back with trailer. Neither all that good.

Did some more trimming on the fender area today. It's only temporary until my shrockworks front bumper shows up, but had a little bit of rubbing on the very bottom tip of the front bumper on each side when reversing up a hill at full lock. I had already pulled the liner forward so I went back and took off about a 1 inch strip from the bottom up about 8 inches following the angle contour. That should keep the tires from hitting the front bumper now.

Next up I am going to remove the rear panel inside the drivers wheel well and try to figure out why its rattling around so much. Once I get a better handle on it I'll see what I can do to secure it better. Will post pics.

Called CBI today and ended up adding a swing arm to my rear bumper order. Also added an extra antenna tab on the swing on the passenger side. And they are going to make me a cover for the spindle for when I don't have the swing arm installed.
