I've finally made a firm decision. I'm gonna try to sell the truck and keep the 06. I really like the 97 and will probably regret this one day in the future. I just don't want to float two builds so I've decided to pick the one that is the best all around for my current needs and the 06 wins since I need it to drive for business use too. Sucky decision for me, I know, but a kick ass truck with all the goodies added and ready to go for who ever buys it.



My current plan is to finish up the interior and get the stereo install done and then get all of the interior panels reinstalled. Also going to replace the vacuum lines since I already have the silicone tubing that I bought to do it with. I had planned to revert it back to stock stereo for sale, but I'm going to see it through with the Pioneer DEH-80PRS head unit, some Polk DB speakers in the doors, and a Polk amp running a sub in the custom box I had built. That way the truck will come complete with the off road stuff but also some modern creature comforts.


I'm probably going to offer it with the winch for one price and without the winch for a lesser price. Just an FYI in case anyone is interested and wants to start asking questions or discussing it. I'll be posting an official ad with details, pictures and pricing once I've gotten the above items done though.


Thanks for all the tremendous support over the past year and a half. I learned a ton about these trucks and had a blast doing the project. I'm not leaving but rather moving my focus over to the 06 runner and the Kawi Mule. :loco:

Looks like I didn't trim enough on the left front pinch weld or something inside that wheel well as I'm still getting a little rubbing when backing out of my drive with wheels at full lock (wheel turned left). Haven't had a chance to see where it's rubbing but it's on my radar screen. It has to still be the pinch weld or the plastic liner, but I guess it could possibly be the back of the fender flare.

Will update once I figure it out and make the appropriate trim.

Had to relocate my 6x12 dual axle trailer that we use to haul the Mule on to store it for a few months. As I am waiting on clips to get the new wheel well liner and fender flare back on the 06, I decided to drag the trailer with the 97.

Left out early this morning and did about 260 miles round trip hauling the trailer half the way. The trailer was empty and I folded the rear gate flat to cut wind resistance but the 97 still didn't like it. It got it up there and managed to maintain highway speeds but it took forever getting up to speed from a stop and burned a bunch more fuel than normal. Would hate to think this was my only vehicle for towing all the time. LOL


Anyway while at out place up in GA I ran the truck around a bit in 4x4, high and low, and ran the rear locker some. I was pleased to find that everything engaged immediately and was running smooth. No off roading fun but some off pavement playing around our property.

I've flim flamed around about selling this truck and I just don't think I'm ever going to get the chance to go wheel it like I used to do with my land rover 10+ years ago. I've struggled very hard with the idea of selling it after putting so much work into it and making it so nice but as I get older and busier I'm starting to think I would be better off to sell it and after a few months of driving the 06, trade it in on a new one. I know it seems crazy but I think I'm just getting tired of the project and am not getting the enjoyment I hoped to get when it was done. Still needs the radio installed but don't be surprised if it's not listed for sale again.

This truck wants to go wheeling and my life just doesn't fit that lifestyle anymore I guess. Someone make me an offer and put me out of my misery. :faint:

If your serious about selling it, put it on eBay and Expo Portal. Everyone on here already has a 4Runner.

The 3rd gens don't tow that great but as you said they get the job done, it's just not easy.

The newer bigger trucks are more difficult to wheel since they are so much bigger. They both have positive points.

I still say sell them both and but a brand new 5th Gen Trail 4Runner. The best 4Runner I have ever owned bar none. For everyday use.

Steve, that's sort of what I was thinking. I've enjoyed so much wrenching on this 97 and doing the restoration project on it and now that it's time to enjoy it I'm just not. But to make a long story short, I've found out this past year I have nerve damage in my arms and elbows and am experiencing constant pain in my arms. It's not been fun but it is making me want to gravitate more towards a ready to go comfort package that doesn't require the project aspect.

This morning it killed my arms and shoulder to get the spare tire down off the rear swing in order to get my trailer to fit the hitch. Putting it back on after dropping the trailer was just as much fun. I don't remember things being this difficult 25 years ago. LOL

My current thoughts are to drive the blue 06 for 6 months to a year and then look at getting a new trail or trd pro model.

I just turned 47 and yeah things are not as easy anymore. I hear you. Sounds like a good plan, the 5th Gen Trail and Pro are great vehicles. They can do wonderful things and are very easy to drive and have tons of power. They are also very comfortable. I have driven our 2012 on 12 and 16 hour trips and it was not that bad. My 2001 would have worked me harder and my Straight axle 3rd gen would have just been a work out. They are expensive however as I am sure you now.

They even have "party mode", KDSS and factory rear lockers again.

Since the 06 is getting it's seats covered I decided to work on the 97 tonight. Managed to get a 10" shallow sub mounted in the custom box with a bunch of poly fill and the wiring for a 2ohm load. (it's dual 4ohm vc)

The wiring is hard wired directly from the box and behind the trim over to the amp. I used stainless screws for the speaker and for attaching the box to the wall of the truck.

Quarter panel trim back in place and well well carpet trimmed for the best fit I could get over the wheel well. The sub still needs a grille to go over it at some point to protect the speaker.

Hard to see it but this shot shows the trim that runs beside the passenger rear trim and covers over the rear quarter panel put in place

Rear passenger door seal trim put into place. That makes the rear passenger side more or less complete. You can barely see it but tucked into the rear wall nearest to the back door is the trailer wiring harness and converter box. It is wired into the rear lighting and runs under the rear door and to the bumper, so the truck is towing ready if needed.

Next up is getting the amp connections made and the drivers side quarter panel and well well fitting into place just like the passenger side. Once that is done I can get the rear hatch door seal in place over the carpet and the overhead roof trim at the door installed with the light and the rear of the truck is finished. whoop whoop

Went out and got a coat of flat black on two of the skids. When they dry a little more I'll move them back into the garage and take the other two out for some flat black. Once all dry I'll try to get these all bolted on later today.

I hope you're able to get what you want for the 4Runner. I have considered selling mine on a couple occasions but after the literal blood and sweat I have put into it, I just cannot do it.

One thing about your auction... If you're SERIOUS about selling it I'd take a LOT more high resolution DETAIL photos. Detail engine bay shots, all aspects of the interior, all corners of the suspension, frame, etc.

If someone is buying THOUSANDS for a vehicle on eBay, they generally want to see it all. As it is now, I wouldn't bid on.

Knowing what it is though, I'd glady use the "buy it now" feature if I had the cash.

Thanks and I hear ya. That's why I at least provided the link to the build thread so people could see the detail and products installed and parts used. Also so they could see dates/times. But, if it doesn't sell I'll be back to that quandary of whether I keep it or strip some items off like winch and stuff to re-list at a lower pricing. Either way I'll take the advice for next time. First of 4 skid plates going on. This is the transfer case skid.

Front skid bolted down tight with 5 new bolts from Savage and blue loctite.

Transmission skid is hanging as well, but I need to get the last skid on before I can tighten everything else down. Thats coming up next and then skids will be done. Whoo Hooo!
