Once again I have to reach out to see if anyone has figured this one out the plastic on plastic clicking sound when the truck is cold and you first turn it on this weekend it was pretty bad is and of course it happens when I am rushing out somewhere! and no there is nothing in the airfilter compartment :redbrick:

I have the same thing and cant figure it out. Its coming from the same area you stated and is present when the a/c condencer kicks on and the idle gets a bit higher for a couple of seconds. Now Im getting it on rough road surfaces also and I cant figure out where its coming from. It seem to be behind the lower portion of the dash (under the glove box). If I take the cabin filter out I can really hear it with all the panels open (glove box, black filter door and then the white filter door) sound right?

Thats it exactly right!!!!!! everything you said!! it's annoying!!! the thing is it happens when the truck is cold when I am leaving to work maybe I should get up earlier and search from where it's coming from! I am hoping someone else has figured this out it's almost embarrassing when you have someone in the truck:cry2: keep us posted if you figure it out

The very bottom piece (where the LED light is) pulls out very easy. So I started to poke around, moved some wires around and used a screw driver to tighten everything. It was good for about 8 hrs and then it started to come back ever so slighty. When I got home I ripped the bottom piece off again and re-tightented everything with a ratchet this time and also the glove box itself (open it up and on the top you can pop those plastic pieces off to expose the bolts.) In the process I broke a clip on the white door for the cabin filter housing, I need to pick up a new one on thursday. Ill let ya know how it is then....

I have the same thing in my 2011 Trail. I thought it was me just being picky so glad to hear others feel the same.
Ok Guys I think I found it if you remove the panel under the glove box that houses the amber light on the footwell you will see a large plastic round clip that holds a bunch of cable together keep in mind I did this two weeks ago and I have not heard the sound since un fasten the clip pull out the cables and I left the clip wide open so the two ends would not touch at all and with nothing else I was not sure if this was the source but I had to try something and so far it's been two weeks and so far nothing! if a month goes by and no sound I will remove the clip completely:frog:
:bigok: Well its been about 2 hours since I popped that clip and it has been ABSOLUTELY SILENT. Mine was getting worse and you would hear it just driving over bumps and now I havent heard it since. Lets hope this is it, thanks a bunch CV470, good find.....my 4runner is silent once again.:bravo::bravo::bravo::cheers:
Thanks for the info. Is it the back panel right beneath the glove box or the panel on the side wall below the glove box that you took off?

First photo is the lower panel that houses the amber LED light, it just pulls out.

Last one. I just drove 40 minutes over all types of crap, stopped the truck on the side of the road with the a/c blasting to let the rpms get up when the compressor kicks on and its super quiet, not a peep. Sorry I dont know how to put all the photos into one thread reply.
