UNIX Administration

Anybody here know what's involved in UNIX Administration? I might be going on an interview for this.

OK, I'll bite. You're going to interview for a job and you don't know what's involved?

UNIX Administration

Install, configure, and sustain computing systems running UNIX (or UNIX like) operating systems.

Perform / manage routine system backups, system monitoring, account creation and account deletion. Gather and/or write scripts to collect performance metrics, monitor disk space, i/o usesage, cpu useage, abnormal system use, detect intrustions, and/or other security vulnerabilities.

Design, develop, implement and/or Specify standardized procedures and scripts for doing one or all of the above.

Server and/or Workstation harware support. Replace failed power supplies, disk, processors, or main boards.

Depending on the environment UNIX Administration might also include any or all of the above for specific applications and/or database products. Network administration and even PC / desktop support are a possibility. Help desk and/or a customer call center could also be a duty of a UNIX admin.

AND now because of the Sarbanes/Oxley rules a LOT of pain in the arse documentation of EVERYTHING you do to satisfy the auditors.

Lots of user and application administration in some jobs.

You had to make it worse by bring up Soxley? Imagine how it is for me, Inforomation Security, firewall management, IDS/IPS, etc.etc.. the list goes on. We have a SOX consultant (I should have done that!) here to 'help' us how and grade our current state and what our future state should look like.

I could go on and on, but I have S/O requirements to complete.:

heh.. I hear ya.. so far I got nothing bearing down on me, most of the recommendation and slamming will be against our physical security, which I don't control.

The SOX stuff seems to change often now too.. I won't pretend to understand it either.

My point is being a Unix Administrator means you know your sh*t. Anyone that knows their sh*t would know the answer to the question and not need to ask it; regardless of what flavor the position entails.

What is Sarbanes/Oxley and how does it apply to a UNIX admin?

I've been an amateur sysadmin on small UNIX systems (Solaris really) and have never heard of this; of course I've been dormant for several years.
