Does anyone know what that pull up handle under the rear heat vents in the 4th gen is used for? Something tells me it's really obvious and I'm just overthinking this one...

It's to hold a garbage bag. You can attach a grocery sack or do a search on these forums for "Hilux Trash Bag" or something to that effect.

If you are talking about the frame that pulls up on the back of the center console under the rear vents, that is a trash bag holder. Some people here bought the trash bag to go with it for the match.
