UPDATE!!! HELP: Minor Flooding Offroad

UPDATE

So I have had the starter and the O2 sensor replaced. The carpet is done. Now I have some kind of exhaust problem it is very loud and not the good kind of loud. The dealer quoted me 3,000 for a full replacement but do I need a full replacement? What should I do?


Hello Y'all

Story: So on Memorial Day I was a dumb teenager and drove my 2004 Toyota 4runner into a ditch on private property with an unknown depth of water. So water got into the passenger side floorboard about 2 inches of water. A fire chief was passing and he stayed with me until the sheriff arrived. The sheriff knew the landowner and he was fine with it. So my parents arrived pissed as expected with one of our Jeep friends. He was able to pull the 4runner out and I drove it home. The sheriff said we had the option of a police report and we decided not to file one for insurance reasons. When we got it home the carpet was pulled out and seats. The water did not reach the seats and only reached the carpet. When I was driving it to school the RPMs went low and we knew it was the O2 sensor. We took it to the dealer (trusted and have a good relationship) They replaced the O2 sensor and also found that the starter is going out. We picked the truck up today and from what I can tell it is running as it was before the incident. The starter will be replaced next week.

Questions:

1. Is there anything else that should be gone through?
2. Is the truck still worth money?
3. Are there problems that are laying in wait for me?
4. Should I sell it after the starter is replaced and get another runner? (It only has 65,000 miles)

If I remember correctly, the computer is up right above the passenger floorboard, between that and the glove box. You may want to check the wiring to and from it, just to make sure there's no moisture hanging around etc.
Otherwise, just give it some time, and rip carpeting out/give the undercarriage a good rinse down with clean water if you want to get into it further.

I also wouldn't sell it because of that, especially if it only has 65,000 miles on it...

Luckily the ECU was high enough water did not get to it!

Then yeah, I would say wait it out for a while and see what problems surface. I can't really think of any that would be worth selling it over, unless you were already thinking about selling it.
 
Be nice to it man, it has 65,000 miles!!!

The rear diff probably has water that seeped in through the breather, I would change the fluids in the rear diff if not front diff, center diff, and engine oil as well. Might as well.
 
Did you extend the rear differential breather.. well any way..

I'd consider replacing the rear differential fluid. If there appears to be water in the fluid. I would drain and refill again. Until it appears moisture free.

You appear due for the front diff. and transfer case fluid change, might as well get that knocked out too.

Get a couple box fans and air it out as best you can.

Oh, and extend your rear diff breather higher..

Just curious is it a V8 or V6?

I agree with everyone else, I see no reason what so ever to sell it, with only 65,000 it's practically brand new!!!

I also highly agree with [MENTION=130999]Inv4drZm[/MENTION] and change all the fluids (the coolant and brake fluid should be fine) ASAP!!!

So now I must ask as a parent....WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING????:fish:

It is a V6. and I don't know what I was thinking... I had a lapse in brain connection. I am a good kid and that was why I got this truck... so parents are pissed. Hopefully they will get over it.

Sam I'm sure you're a great guy/son and I was just messing with you, I'm sure your parents will get over it but it will take a little bit of time,
just make sure they know you know how big of a mistake this was and most importantly could of been, because if the water had been deeper
it could of sucked water into the engine which would of damaged the engine beyond repair!!

Let them know that your buddies here very knowledgeable on T4Rs have assured you from the info posted that there doesn't appear to be any
permanent damage done.

Just an FYI if you don't know most if not all vehicles have a rear diff breather and they are located on the rear diff housing which means unless
the breather has been relocated with a hose up higher within the body water could have gotten into the rear diff, that is what
[MENTION=207708]L8Shift[/MENTION] was asking, so if the breather has never been relocated then I and as others have mentioned
would recommend changing the diff fluid if not all fluids just to be on the safe side.

What do you mean by not the good kind of loud with the exhaust? Is it doing it at idle or at speed? Crawl underneath it while it's running and see if you can nail down where the noise is coming from. Time to start learning how to work on this thing now so you can save your parents some bank account pain. If it's actually the exhaust that's the problem and it's not a gasket, loose joint, or hangar that fell off, start looking at junk yards for a new exhaust. They're likely a dime a dozen and can be had a lot cheaper than what the dealership is going to charge for a new setup.

I've posted this before but I'll post it again. If you're gonna keep doing shit then you may as well have some reading material.

I've been stuck in water about this deep while out wheeling before. Enough to have waves across the floor when the doors closed!! Didn't have any issues like you did but it was only for about 5 mins. Main concern would be diff fluid if you don't have it extended. As long as you don't have any rust issues on the exhaust system or didn't bash it on it, I don't see any issues arising from water submersion. Good luck man! Keep her clean!
 
If they say you need a full exhaust I would go aftermarket and upgrade to a flowmaster or Gibson. You might need to sell the 4runner and cut your losses if you cant a Ford to fix it.
 
Update: 6/30/19

I thought I would update this post. I was able to pay off my debts to my parents!! I ended up having to replace the following:
Starter
3 Idler Pulleys
Water Pump
1 O2 sensor
Jute (stuff under carpet)
And a full fluid flush.

These were all done with OEM parts at a Toyota Dealer. I am very glad I kept Jeb (the 4Runners Name) My parents have gotten over it as you said they would and have let me start offroading and start to modify the 4Runner.

It ended up being that the exhaust was not compromised but it was the pulleys that were creating the Toyota tick.

Again thank yall for your help and time figuring out this matter. If anyone else sinks their 4Runner send them to me I can help. LOL

I just got a Job for the summer and senior year so mods will be coming in hot first up is Kings. Go and follow my IG account @jeb_t4r to see stuff going on soon. But I will be starting a build thread shortly. Here is a photo of Jeb doing what Jeb does the best wheeling! Dad was driving this time lol and we blew three shocks at Jambo whoops.
