update microSD navigation maps

You should be able to get one through the dealer, but it will cost you an arm and a leg. I know some people are selling DVDs on ebay. I also have a 2012 and was thinking of trying one of the ebay discs. I've been trying to find info to confirm a DVD is the correct way to update, but haven't been able to find anything yet. I know we don't have the micro SD slot. Those are on the '14+ model years.

I haven't found any info on how to actually do the update. Not sure if the unit will automatically recognize the disc and perform the update or if there are certain steps you need to go through.

The nav in my SR5P is pathetic. I doesn't locate a 40 year old address on a common road in a nearby suburb. I was checking into upgrading my nav :moony:
. F$%& the hundreds of dollars Toyota wants for this. :gun4: That is NEVER going to happen.

So, I ran across this today. There is no context around it. The FAQ indicates there may be fees. Does anyone know if this is applicable to a 4Runner (mine is a 2015 SR5P);

I started a post for that link, someone tried it and they had no luck. I plan on trying it as soon as I can find a blank card to use

there was stuff about it being free for the first year, I looked up the price and after year one it was like 59.00. either way, we don't know for sure if it works yet. I have extra cards somewhere, I can never seem to find them when I need one, I hope to try it this weekend

If $150 year 1 and $59 p/y thereafter for Garmin updates is far more palatable.

I did the same, create a backup raw image. In my experiences, you can create a raw image of the microSD and copy to the same microSD so you will have a valid backup if the microSD card should it become corrupt. But you cannot copy the raw image to a different (faster) microSD. I was going to buy a faster microSD and put the new raw image on it. Before I bought the 16 Gb microSD, I performed a test. My test was to raw image the new microSD to the old microSD. The result of the test was the head unit couldn't read the old microSD with the new microSD raw image. I copied the old raw image back on the old microSD and the head unit could read the old microSD.

Old = 86271-35010
New = 86271-OE184

I hate the initial lag when the head unit reads the microSD and thought I could resolve this for $10. I believe the maps are loaded on the hard drive of the Entune head unit (the 9 minutes to upgrade) but the head unit still reads/verifies the microSD card to prevent horse play. :naughty: ie, someone upgrading their maps then sharing the microSD card to other to upgrade their head unit.

Did you clone the volume ID as well ?

NAV Updates

I'm going to preface this by saying that no, I have not tried these. That being said...

My guess is that this wouldn't work. Well, I guess it depends on which stereo you have. I have the middle level Entune stereo (Toyota - Entune - the one called "Entune Premium Audio") and it does not recognize any DVD discs that I have tried in the system. This includes traditional DVD movies, burned audio, etc. From the link you sent, my guess is that it won't read that, either.

I just tried installing a Maps Update DVD and the same thing happened to me, not recognized.

My 2015 4Runner TRD came with the POS built in Navigation in the headunit.

Clunky and not user friendly - honestly I think it's crap. I use my Iphone and Google Maps.

Would much rather have a new headunit that interfaces with my Iphone like my GF's lesser expensive Honda CRV which has a stereo system that blows away the TRD's. I think that is the only way to go.

Seems that map updates come out in May of each year. Does anyone have the part number of the latest map update? I believe the May 2018 update was sd card part number 86271-0e071. I’m assuming a May 2019 update should be out very soon.
