update microSD navigation maps

I use an app called onXmaps. It has topo, street, 2 different aerial maps. 30$ a state every year. it is also free, but offers no more than google maps free.

Includes layers for state/blm/private private lots/sections have the names of owners. I wish I could mirror it to my deck so bad.

To bad onx could make a SD card that would load into the head unit like a gps

I too can verify on the 2014 - 2017 4Runners that all you need is a newer map update microSD card. I bought one off eBay, 2017 update, 86271-OE184. I have the Entune with the hard drive. When I put the OE184 microSSD in, and turned the key to ACC, I was prompted with:
"New software found"
"New software is ready for update. Park your car in a safe location, and turn the engine off and on to complete the update, INSTALL"
"Installing the new software... Please keep the media inserted and do not turn off the engine"
"Software update has been finished successfully to version v0101D4, RESTART"
Process took 9 minutes.

Before: Map version 05-33-08 2013-06-8 (86271-35010)
After: Map Version: 05-36-51 2016-05-1 (86271-OE184)

I read here that Toyota map updates are released in the fall. Toyota drops the price in the spring. I think Toyota dealership quoted me (Spring price) $149 plus labor. Buyer beware on eBay because people are selling old microSD map updates. I was going to upgrade the head unit if I could not get a fair price on the map update microSSD. Dash comes apart pretty easily. I took the dash apart to clean the multi-information center display because previous owner got something on the inside display lens.

Thanks for the info. Found it on eBay.. did you pay $90? I may wait until next year to get it a bit cheaper.

I paid $80 + shipping. The seller from Florence, Alabama. He gets 5 at a time and sells from $80 - $90. I too was going to wait for a deal but my maps were old and became an issue.

thanks

my 2016 TEP was purchased around Nov 1, 2016 fresh off the boat from a SET dealer. my map date screen shows 5-2016 dates but the microSD doesnt have the OE18x style code.

as far as regions, i think that there is detailed info for all regions on every card, you just have to cycle through the onscreen to see west coast, southeast, northeast, alaska, hawaii, canada, mexico, etc. there was detail zones for each of these regions on my card.

btw i have a linux setup and am tempted to clone it just to have a backup.

Glad I clicked this thread to find the map update also updates the software. I've been having issues with my head unit locking up while on the phone or playing bluetooth music. Will lock up and not reset until vehicle was turned off and back on, this is a real PITA 10 minutes into a 90 minute trip. Entune support had me read them versions of my software and said I needed a software update. Dealer wanted $120, then $60. If I can pay $90 and get updated maps too then why not? Worst case, I update my maps, and still have to pay dealer $60. Although if this doesn't work I may be looking at something aftermarket instead. I found an eBay seller about 90 minutes away, and hope to have before end of the week.

UPDATE: Got the eBay card in the mail today, it has Toyota printed right on the card, absolutely not added later. Popped old card out, new one in, started truck. It found new software, asked me to park somewhere and turn off engine. Then once started installing, asked not to turn off truck - typical ambiguous instructions, so I left it in accessory position for the update. Once done shut it down and went back inside, I don't expect any problems, and didn't have to go anywhere yet.

I did the same, create a backup raw image. In my experiences, you can create a raw image of the microSD and copy to the same microSD so you will have a valid backup if the microSD card should it become corrupt. But you cannot copy the raw image to a different (faster) microSD. I was going to buy a faster microSD and put the new raw image on it. Before I bought the 16 Gb microSD, I performed a test. My test was to raw image the new microSD to the old microSD. The result of the test was the head unit couldn't read the old microSD with the new microSD raw image. I copied the old raw image back on the old microSD and the head unit could read the old microSD.

Old = 86271-35010
New = 86271-OE184

I hate the initial lag when the head unit reads the microSD and thought I could resolve this for $10. I believe the maps are loaded on the hard drive of the Entune head unit (the 9 minutes to upgrade) but the head unit still reads/verifies the microSD card to prevent horse play. :naughty: ie, someone upgrading their maps then sharing the microSD card to other to upgrade their head unit.

I've tried that and it didn't work as expected. I am thinking there is some kind of hardware key embedded in the SD card. YMMV

I think you are correct that there is a unique hardware key in place. I believe it is based on the unique identifier of the microSD card. Hence you can raw image to the same microSD card but not a different microSD card, even if both are Toyota branded microSD cards.

To confirm, you are saying that the SD card cannot be shared by multiple people?

Louise - You cannot image the microSD card to a different microSD card. The maps microSD card cannot be duplicated.

If you had two 2014 - 2017 4Runners, you could upgrade the maps in both but only the 4Runner that has the latest microSD card will be able to use the updated maps. If I put my old microSD card in, I use my old maps. If I put the new maps microSD card in, I use the newer maps. I says this because you could put the updated maps microSD card in the 4Runner you are taking on a long trip and need the most current maps. So in that scenario, you could share the newer microSD card. I don't think that is what you meant. Not sure if this goes against Toyota End User Agreement.

Understood. Thank you!

This is the same part number "86271 35014" for the card that came with the 2017 4Runner I just picked up last week..

my understanding is people selling these on ebay are selling "copies" of the toyota update on an sd card . it is possible with the proper software.

as we all know anyone can be hacked ...

60 bucks is a reasonable cost which is what Toyota should charge or just put it out for us to download into our GPS.. GPS on my 2016 is not up to date meaning on the actual hyway changes made that I noticed .

catrains - I was going to add the line anything can be hack if the price is right but I didn't want to confuse my explanation. Totally agree with you. It is possible to alter unique hardware IDs. Apple stopped showing "Activation Lock Status" on their website because hackers were using this information to bring back to life bricked Apple devices. Previously it was used to see if the Apple device you were going to buy used had Activation Lock enabled. Links are worth a look if you are interested. This is a mass production operation. A simple hardware ID change on a micros SD card is easy with the proper toolset. Rumor has it you can turn on navigation on the newer generation Ford Sync with very few lines of code.

Apple likely took down iCloud Activation Lock to stop hacks relying on stolen serial numbers

I was wondering if you can use a topo map microsd for a certain state, could i just switch out the sd card in my 2014 headunit? Thanks

I would be concerned with the fact that you have US and not Canada maps! I am in the same boat with 2015 mag grey limited. Arrived with US maps installed. You can use them but the maps are limited to main roads only. I have not updated mine yet but it should be a free update to Canada maps. Check the map coverage on your unit and you will see the limitations.

Same problem here on 2015 TEP. Imported originally to Toyota in BC, but SD with US / North West States maps.
Would be awesome to have both; US / North West States maps plus Canadian West Provinces.:canada:
KostyaK, what was your solution - did you get the Canadian maps somehow?

This is interesting. A month back I drive up to Vancouver, BC and to the Ferry over to Victoria and found that my stock maps worked fine up in Canada. I honestly don't have a clue to what the coverage area is on these. I had prepaid for cell coverage as I didn't think they would work across the boarder. I have a 2016 SR5 Premium.

Nav CD/Disk 2012

Hi, guys! I am new to forums and also a new 4Runner owner. :) This is my first question/post besides trying to introduce myself. Does anyone know where I can get an updated disk for my 2012? Can I buy one for the 2017 and will it work in it? Thank you!
