Upgrade 2018 to Support CarPlay?

Thanks for pics. Hmm torn if I like that sitting away from the dash or not.

That was certainly one of things I wondered if I would like. I had driven a few rentals, a couple of Benz’s in particular, that had floating screens. I liked the look and thought I would here. I set it on the “closest” setting to the dash...it is adjustable up, down, in, out and at an angle. The unit itself if killer. All of a matter of personal preference though.

Awesome! I literally have this whole setup sitting in my garage right now. I prewired everything myself already, just need to find time to install everything cause i'm adding USB and HDMI ports to my glovebox also. Did you get the iDatalink as well?

I don't mind it sticking out but not a fan of it blocking the vents

I don’t know what’s locked. Nothing I’ve felt compelled to access yet.

I believe that you might be able to install it in the lower portion of the metra kit and put the small pocket on top. That would drop it another couple of inches. I have a spare silver kit at the house still, I’ll look and see if its possible. Then you could also adjust it up as well to get it at just the right height to your liking.

Over the Christmas break I installed an Alpine Halo 9” head unit (in fact old Nav head unit is for sale). Metra came out with black oem look painted single/double DIN kit. The whole thing, prewired by Crutchfield was about $1200. The Painted metra kit was another $65. This gives you a 9” screen and all of the latest take, without the hassles of the entune life. I couldn’t be happier. I can post pics later if anyone is interested.

I installed an Alpine iLX-107 in my Tacoma this past summer myself.
I love this head unit. I think it's one of the only Car Play units with it's own built in WiFi. I don't need cables or bluetooth. I just jump in my truck and it connects.
I installed the bypass that allows all functions while driving, not that I do that.
Also all my steering wheel controls work and you can program them to do whatever you want within the radios capabilities.

I just purchased a 2019 4runner TRDORP and I'm ready to install another Alpine iLX-107 into it. 7" screen is big enough for me and looks factory minus all the outside buttons.

Finally got around to it on Friday. I was able to install it on the bottom of the metra kit using the double din mounts, which i prefer since it doesnt cover the air vents. The pocket does not fit on the top and need to rig something to cover the hole, you can't tell unless you really look behind it. I installed hdmi/usb and usb plugs in the glove box. I have Chromecast plugged into the hdmi port. Also changed the startup image to a photo i took last week. Overall easy install and love the headunit. Definite increase in sound quality, especially with Carplay, and not feeling forced to wanting to change the speakers so soon.

Ordered Kenwood 9905 - no navigation (offline Google maps work great over CarPlay), but HD screen - avoid units with 480p.

Ordered black Metra kit. Will see if I can get arsed to paint Scosche that would come with Crutchfield's install kit.

Important bit for me was support for front camera. Saves a lot of spotting.

I will try and take more photos later. But for the most part, it does block the view of some of the hvac controls. Not an issue since nothing is digital and I pretty much know where the knobs are set to based on feel of the orange markers.

Both were tapped into the radio wire harness. All three USB plugs are for power only and are constant on even with the truck off. The usb plug in the center console under the hvac control is linked to the headunit, that's the port for carplay. In your glovebox, there should be a rectangular and a circle outline for these sockets, those just pop out when you take your glovebox out. I had to drill the hole a bit larger for the dual usb socket to fit but it's nice to have the additional voltmeter on it. I've linked both below. Let me know if you need additional help.

Do you have it adjusted to the highest height position?
