Urgent, at the junkyard will a second gen swing away tire carrier fit

Like the title says, I'm at a junk yard and found a second gen with an own swing away tire carrier, does anyone know if the body lines will match up with ours

It would take a lot of modification to the tailgate and side panel. You would have to replace of fabricate a latch mechanism onto our tailgate and reinforce the side paneling to attach the swing out. Plus I doubt the lines on both gens are the same so the mounts wouldn't work. It would be awesome to be able to use one, but just way too much work if it is even possible.

I think the reinforcement in the pillar would be the biggest set back/expense. They had extra bracing to support the weight of the tire/carrier.

No it won't fit becuase our tailgates contour over our tail lights unlike the 2nd gen where they go straight up. So our doors would get in the way of the mounting system.

you could get a fab shop to reinforce the inside of the body panel and also re-work the top hinge point so that it clears the door but I am not sure the expense worth it. I know this question comes up every few months along with the tire carrier off the Hilux Surf. The surf version would be easier to convert over since it has the same hatch design but the body reinforcements would be important and the import fees astronomical.

Yeah I didn't think about the weight on it but it does have the bolt on latch attachment for the rear door. Oh well I guess I'll just have to buy a new one

I would take these pictures to a local fab shop and ask if they could make the top hinge mod and the inside reinforcement. I honestly think it can be done and everyone gets told it can't so have never tried. Like I said the question comes up once in a while. You could be the first to do it if the price is reasonable. If the interior panel is gone you can also take pics of the reinforcement.

I actually thought about doing with this or just getting one of those tire carriers like on the back of the land rovers. The ones that carry the tire on the back hatches. Taking one of those and reinforcing my hatch and then getting stronger lift pistons to hole the weight. Not sure if that would be possible though.

You should look into it! That would be the ideal set up in my opinion. I'm not sure how much room there is in there because of the window rolling down. Im sure it COULD be done, it's just one of those cost/pita vs. function things.

I might.. I just bought a welder and tube bender though.. lol so I'm kind if obligated to build my own tube rear bumper to match the front tube bumper I have on the way..

Oh God no, those suck on the land rovers, they warp the door and hinges after a while, and the day those shocks fail you will have a fun time lifting that tailgate or getting smacked in the head by it, but i doubt you'll find a shock that will hold the the wieght and will still let the hatch close.

That is exactly what I am worried about. I think the hardest part would be to get a strong enough but small enough piston to fit under the hatch.

Don't waste your money on it. Instead grab the license plate holder and fab up a swing out carrier on your own and use the license plate carrier for the retro look.
