Urgent - please help!

So my 2008 4Runner has a transmission problem I think, but I need your help to know exactly. Basically if I shift from park in to drive there is a small delay and also if I start from 0 mph and start going it sounds like something is trying to kick in or a clunk or something is dropping. I am at 91,000 miles, and I just bought it at 88,000, I don't think any transmission service was done.

I am trying to save money and do it myself. I don't have good pictures but I checked the transmission fluid today and it looks a little brown. Would it be a good time for me to flush it at a shop, or should I just replace the fluid myself and see if the problem goes away. If I were to replace it myself should I change the filter also?

Last question here's a picture of my left inner side CV boot. I noticed that it was leaking. Is it good enough to just clean it up and try to strap down the CV boot tightly?

If you are having trans issues, STOP driving it until it's diagnosed and repaired.

You will have either replace the boot, or the replace the assembly. Depends on how long it's been open. Personally, if the boots open and dumped I replace the assembly.

Stop driving your car and figure out what is the issue before you make it worse. Sounds like it could be your tranny, tcase, or diffs.

Is that picture of what the underside of your car looks like after siting? If so, you got a major leak and I would get that towed in.:wow:

As far as your CV boots go, replace it.

That clunk might just be the driveshaft not being lubed. But is that pool of flood leaking tranny fluid?

Stop driving it. If it's a tranny issue you don't want it to get worse, and DIY weekend warrior stuff might not be enough to fix it. If it were me I'd have it towed to a shop and get it diagnosed by a mechanic. 90k miles is low to be having brown fluid and transmission issues.

Have the transmission serviced. Should be fine. As far as the clunk, lube the slip joints in the front and rear drive shafts. Driveshaft slip joints and u-joints should be lubed every 5k miles while performing the oil change service
