I'm exceeding my post allotment today! With the difficulty finding Trail Premiums in Ca, I have expanded my search to used trail editions. Other than the front end, gauge cluster, and softex seat material, are there any differences between the vehicles? Any years with know problems to avoid? I am looking outside my local area as well, and have a friend who deals in used cars checking auctions for me. Obviously KDSS is a must. Any input on pricing? Thanks again, I'm on a mission to get into one of these vehicles now.

Ordering is not so simple. Basically dealers are allotted vehicles as they roll of the line. Nobody can tell me how long the wait will be or how many more Trail edition's will even be built. I want the car for summer. I also have looked at used and it seems I can save about 10k. Pretty substantial if the vehicles are essentially the same.

I feel for you brother, I was in your shoes two years ago. I spent about six weeks searching all around the bay area for trail editions.
Every time one would show up on the computer inventory I would call or go there and the story was always the same. Oh we just sold that last night, or yesterday, would you like to look at a Tacoma?
Hang in there, I finally found mine in Elk Grove. Just keep watching the dealer inventory online. Or if you find a dealer and sales person that you like, have them try to find one for you. They can dealer trade another vehicle for one and bring it in for you if you are really serious.
As for used, I think they are even more scarce than new ones, but I would recommend an 11 or 12 if you can find one. First year vehicles always have the bugs to work out of a new design and the 13s up added a smog air pump under the hood taking up room and making an un necessary piece of equipment to deal with.
But compared to a Jeep they are all good. (I am a former Grand Cherokee owner).

Try Precision Toyota in Tucson, AZ
when i bought my Trail Edition in March 2012, they had three on the lot. Two magnetic grey and a silver one. Pretoy.com Long drive, but short flight.
I would find a pre-2014 trail edition and grab that thing up. SOOOOOOO MUCH COOLER LOOKING than the new unless you want a white one.

Get a new one and keep it 10+ years, then the difference in price won`t matter much.
I had the same problem with local dealers not having what I wanted and giving me stories about allocations etc.
I contacted another dealer and worked with their internet/fleet sales manager(sales rep) and was able to order my Trail the way I wanted. Took about 10 weeks.
Let me know if you want to try my dealer in southern Cal.

I have a 2010 Trail Edition with KDSS. I was slightly worried about getting the first year of a new redesign, but so far everything has been great. I got it two years ago with just under 20,000 miles on it. At that time and still today, Trail Editions are very rare in Texas so I pounced on it. Given Toyota's reliability and the lack of too many major complaints from owners on this forum, I would not hesitate to recommend a used Trail Edition if it has been well maintained and treated well.
Yeah, one is a certified pre-owned toyota which comes with a 7 year 100k warranty. That is also quite appealing. Still haven't heard if there were any changes other than cosmetic and interior niceties which would make me stay with new. I'm thinking low 30's on a 25k mile trail with that warranty would be q a pretty good deal.

I would be patient for a new one if that's what I really wanted. Dealers have other ways of getting you what you want. Either from their allocation, or transferring from other dealers.
Or, given the cost of a one way plane ticket compared to a new vehicle, maybe look into going out of state and buy one and enjoy the drive home in it. I have never tried it, but I wonder if you could contact and go thru the US distributor that services your area and see if they can help locate one or tell when one is coming thru them to a dealer. I have seen dealer websites list vehicles in inventory before they have been physically delivered to their lot, so they have to know what's coming, to a certain extent.

If there were much more changes than that, it would be considered a new generation. For my taste, the change in the front facia alone should make it a new generation. Don't mean to touch a nerve with anyone, but that new look has not grown on me one bit yet.

That warranty coming with the vehicle is good. Mine was certified used as well, and like I said had just under 20K miles. IIRC I paid just under $34K sticker. I am happy with the deal I got still after 27K miles I have put on the vehicle.

There is ONE used TE (not Premium) here in Grand Junction. A blue 2010 with 60K miles & KDSS, new tires, with dealer asking about $30K--probably $3-4K too much. Wife hated the color.
Anyway, when we visited our local dealer last Saturday, the salesperson had no problem locating what we wanted within their "region" and dealer-traded for it (a very common practice). We pick it up tomorrow. Yes, it will have 250 miles on it as it is being driven over from Denver--the price you pay, ya know.
Wife wanted the moonroof too, but neither of us was willing to put up with softex upholstery. Cloth is SOOO much more comfortable in the summer.

250 miles is not a big deal. Keep in mind that the warranty mileage starts at whatever the mileage is when you take delivery, not at 0.
If I was trying to work with a dealer that doesn't at least try and find one for me, I would find it myself and go get it. The local dealer doesn't have to like it but they do still have to service it. Most dealers I go to always make a point to say "if we don't have what you want, we will go get it". When I bought our 5th gen, it was uncommon to find more than 2 or 3 on any dealer lot. My dealer had a white one like we wanted but we wanted silver. He found one and we took delivery the next day. Yes it had a couple hundred miles on it but after a week or two, we didn't know the difference.
Ive got two young kids and i get in and out of the vehicle wearing wet muddy clothes during duck season so softex is a big plus for me but seat covers would do the same thing on a used model. The 2011 is a blue color which i wonder if i will grow to dislike it after a while. Im usually a white grey silver guy

if looks between the 2013 vs 2014 is a non issue then I would give my following advice.
if the price of the 2013 is in the low 30's I would get a new 2014 since they are running around low 30's to mid 30's for brand new.
but then again I like the looks of both 13's and 14's, just went with the 14's for creature features since I will be behind the wheel more than outside looking at it.

250 miles is not a big deal for me either, but some folks unrealistically insist on less than 10 miles. Cool if that's their bag.
Dealers here on the Western Slope are all too small to maintain huge inventories or get big allocations from Toyota, so they have to trade frequently to get what their customers want. Usually that's the first thing out of their mouths when I say: "I want a different color." It's like: "No problem, we can get whatever you want."

I wouldn't doubt if every vehicle on Reno Toyota's website is mislabeled. I spent a lot of time talking to them and almost made the drive before I realized what they had listed as a Trail was actually a Trail Premium w/o KDSS. They had no idea what I was talking about. If you deal with them, make sure you have an exact spec sheet in your hand before you waste your time.
