I have a hardtop RTT, and have been looking at options to mount it. I always imagined I'd get a roof rack for my 4runner, but realized I wouldn't use it for anything outside of mounting an RTT. I don't plan on mounting any awnings or anything else for that matter on the roof.
Now I don't see the point in adding the extra weight of the roof rack (however much depending which rack maybe 80-100+ pounds). Then add the weight of the RTT on top of the weight of the roof rack onto my roof. I've seen photos of 5th Gens using aftermarket crossbars such as Thule and Rhino Rack to mount them. I've seen one using two regular Thule bars, and one using four Rhino Rack bars. The guy who used the four Rhino Rack bars reported his held up just fine, even on tough trails.
My concern is whether four bars is even necessary, or if cross bars shouldn't be trusted at all for offroad use. I want it to be able to last through typical Moab type rock crawling. I've used two Thule bars for my Thule roof top carrier, and it did just fine in Moab and other offroading, although it didn't weigh nearly as much. My RTT weighs about 120lbs.
Anybody have any input on this or other suggestions for my use? I'd like it to be as cost effective, and lightweight as possible. I'm nearly set on the crossbars, but have recently been interested in the Rhino Rack backbone system for the 4runner coming out soon.
