Utilizing Cig lighter harness

I was thinking of adding another 12V outlet, hidden in the console area. My T4R does not have the ashtray/ligher. I was thinking I could tap into the spare ashtray harness plug that is hanging useless inside the console.

Anyone know what pins I'd need to hit just for the power (no lighting etc.)?

Why not just buy the ashtray kit?

I would but I kind of want to have a stealth outlet... keep something plugged in out of site, yet still portable without a plug and cord hanging around.
 
Duh... I guess I could mount the ashtray kit in the console instead of the 'stock' location..... costs about 10x more than a simple plug though.


Still, if one of you wiring gurus knows which wires to splice on the ashtray plug, let me know. THX!
 
The terminals for the cigarette lighter are in connector IR1. This is a 6-position connector and the 6 terminals form a "U" pattern (more-or-less). The 12V wire is pin# 6 and the wire color is pink with a blue stripe. The ground wire is Pin# 5 and is white with a black stripe.
 
I installed one in the console for my cell phone. I picked it up at Autozone, drilled a hole in the front of the console box so the wires would come out under the console. Mounted it on the front side of the box to hide the hole. I tapped into the wiring as described above. Works great & keeps the clutter in the box. The only thing I wanna change is changing it to a constant 12V instead of ignition, to charge the cell when the car is off also.
Just use a grommet or tape to protect the wires going thru the hole, so they don't rub & wear.
 
Yea I have also been thinking about this. I picked up an additional 12v adaptor at Radio Shack. I would like to install it inside of the glove box. I have the factory 12v adaptor in the consol. But I want the original to be powered all the time and the new one to be powered with the ignition key on. So I have some re-wiring to do. I found rubber grommets in the electrical department at HomeDepot and also at Radio Shack. They are necessary and also make the job look professional.

No, I did not get a Roady2 yet . It’s killin me. They are almost impossible to find. That’s the reason me buying a second 12 volt adaptor for the arm-rest.:eek:
 
Thanks for the tips. I did the install today for my new sattelite radio. I was hoping to mount the radio up in/on the console but it just wasn't going to work out so I mounted it where the 'storage cubby' is.

I still installed a 12V outlet utilizing the ashtray wires but its 100% hidden under the console. Thanks for your help!


GREASY.. bummer on that Roady2. I couldn't find any either except the demo units at CC, BB, etc. After playing with a number of the different sat radios, I decided that I actually liked the bigger units better as they can hold more info on the screen at once. Getting around the menus is simpler, etc.
However, I was not able to mount the box in the console so there is that drawback...
 
Jason: glad to hear that your crusin with new tunes. So how did you decide to run the ant wire? Did you try it on the dashboard or did you run it from the outside?
 
Greasy: I gotta tell you, SAT radio is awesome... within a couple of minutes I found tons of songs I liked. I ended up going with a Sirius Sportster but it doesn't matter what service you get, Sirius or XM... its all goooood... :D

I didn't even try to mount it on the dash... It may have worked but the book says to find a spot with lots of metal around so I thought I'd just try to do it right on the first try.

I mounted the antenna on the back/center of the roof by the rear hatch. I ran the wire down between the body and the hatch, pulled the rubber hatch seal out a bit, ran it along that seal to the left side of the car until you come to a point where the interior headliner and plastic come together (just above the rear mirror or speaker(w/JBL 10spkr)). You can easily push the headliner in a bit and stuff the wire in the gap between the headliner and plastic. When you get to the doors, just transition from the headliner/plastic to the headliner/rubber. I then ran it down the A-piller to the bottom of the dash, across to the center console. I then ran it between the silver dash trim and the dash itself over to the storage cubby.

I thought it would be tough but its actually really simple. Just use something really flat to help get the wire stuffed where you want it. I'd recommend something like a credit card or the like as it won't scratch up the interior if you happen to slip.

If you are running to the center console, You could do it like I did or veer off at the B-piller. I still had maybe 2-3 feet of wire left so it might be close if you took it all the way to the dash first.

Thanks for that. Knowing that there is 2-3 feet of antenna wire, left to spare will help me with my future installation. I am taking my time in deciding what I want as far as receivers. At the rate it’s going, it will be Christmas time before the Roady2 & SkyFi2 will be available in mass quantities. But I have to admit, I am very excited to be part of great thing :)

I only have one pic of the antenna that I snapped for fun. I don't have any of the interior, but then again, the wire is hidden so you wouldn't see anything anyways.
If you are looking for something else, let me know and I can snap some more pics tonight.
