I have mine set at 17 gallons, that way by the the time it says I am about empty, I know I need to get more. Our tank is 18, but some of the last gallon can't be used, so better to be safe than sorry.
There's a better way.
Change your max gallons back to 18.5 gallons. Fill up. Drive until close to empty doing your normal route city/highway.
Then fill up again and note how many gallons you used.
Now on the Ultra-Gauge, I believe it's under "vehicle setup>calibrate (or something like that)" you can calibrate how many gallons were actually used compared to the calculated. The UG creates a multiplier and adjusts everything to get a more accurate reading.
I originally set my UG to 17 gallons, but this is way better.
There's also a way to calibrate your rotational distance, but I haven't tried that one yet.

I ran out of gas with 25mi showing on my scangauge, which translated to just over a gallon. Since then I start getting nervous around 50miles left.
The UG uses the same information to calculate, so if you set up a miles to empty, you may experience the same thing.
