Uwharrie National Forest for a stock/n00b

Gonna be heading to NC this weekend for a wedding and I'm hoping to get in a quick trip to Uwharrie since it's only about 2 hours from where I'll be. Any tips for trails to hit with a stock 4th Gen? From what I've read, Falls Dam and Wolf's Den are under the "easy" category. Not really looking to go all out since I still have to drive 12 hours back to Chicago haha

Stay away from Daniel and Dickey Bell (may be able to do this one, but I'd be cautious) and you should be fine. You are in luck though: Find the Carolina 4Runners Off Road Group on Facebook. I think a couple of them are planning on going out this weekend. Most of them are 5th gens with some mods, but they're also really worried about their paint jobs... :violin:

If you happen to still be around the weekend of 7/1, I'd be glad to show you around, but I'll likely be beating on my poor truck.

So where can you find some trail maps of these routes? I did a brief scan on google maps and did not see the spots you guys mentioned. I live in southern VA and have been looking for a good spot for a road trip to test out my T4R.

I'm not aware of any gps maps or anything particularly fancy, but maps are available here:

The trails are pretty well marked once you get out there, and there are typically people that are pretty familiar and well equipped out and playing around.

Awesome! I'll look into that for sure. We're only gonna be there for the weekend and I'll probably only have half a day to try to get out there and back. I wish we could get out there sooner but you know, work stuff haha. Do you know if there's any other areas worth exploring closer to Wagram or Laurinburg??

Sorry. I'm not aware of anything near there. Again: the Carolina 4R Facebook group is probably a good resource. It's people from both SC and NC kinda all over. Some of them may know something I don't. I've only been in Raleigh about a year and a half and haven't had the chance to explore too much of the state yet. Hope the maps come in handy!

Im one of the guys heading out there on Saturday with some of the other T4R guys/gals although ill be in my toyota pickup. I think most everyone is planning on meeting at the outpost around 10AM. I'll probably wheel with them a bit and then split off with a club to ride some of the harder trails. Im pretty familiar with the trail system. You can do every trail in a stock 4runner, but if you like your paint and body, Id stay away from Daniel, Dickey Bell and Dutch John. Everything else you can do stock easily without too much trouble if you have ever been offroad. The one exception Id say is the backside of Daniel, that portion of the trail is easily navigable. Just dont try to go up the front side. If you start going down a road called cotton place thats the front side and I highly recommend not going up the trail. With all the rain we have been getting, the trails are also probably muddy and wet. Heres a good trail map I use: FYI Dicky Bell is listed as a moderately easy trail on the map, but there is one section called little Daniel that is extremely difficult and there are no bypasses.

Thanks for all the feedback! I sent the request to the Carolina 4Runner group so I'll see what they're up to. Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze in the trip out there and hopefully the weather cooperates.

Hey everyone, I picked up my 4th gen back in March, and just found this thread searching for some info on running the Uwharrie OHV trails with a stock truck. Thanks for all the info. If anyone is looking for .gpx file tracks for the OHV trails, I found them a while back on the ADV rider forum (I've run some of the trails on my KLR650).

This site won't let me upload .gpx files, but if you google search "uwharrie OHV trail gpx files", one of the first several links is the ADV rider thread and one of the posters uploaded the file about halfway down the page. You have to have an account to download the files.

Also, what sort of recovery gear/tools would you recommend for a newbie with a stock truck? I'm running Toyo Open Country AT2's, but beyond that it's bone stock.

I probably won't hit the OHV trails too often, but I'd like to have the ability to get myself out of some of the more common issues that could come up when I do decide to head out there.
