*** V6 Head Gasket Action Request ***

2004 V6 2wd sport. Head gasket went @173k miles. Started noticing symptoms of initial rough idle, slow coolant loss and gurgling from behind dash around 160k. Didn't trip CEL until 173k and at that point the rough idle was continuous, not just 5-10 seconds after start up. $4k later =Thank you sir may I have another. Its actually in the shop as I write this post. Hydro carbon test in radiator confirmed it but I new what it was long before hand due to the number of informative posts. I couldn't get much for it on a trade and didn't feel right selling it to private party so I decided to just keep it until I had to fix it. It's in awesome shape really and I'll probably just keep it around for a utility vehicle now. Too bad I didn't buy the v8...

Add me to the list too. 2004 with about 140k on the motor. Had rough idle occasionally, and losing coolant, and failed block test. No check engine light at any point though, so mustve caught it early

Issue started a couple of weeks ago. First with the water sound coming from the heater core, then the 30 seconds of rough idle in the morning. Did a simple check during the weekend by removing the radiator cap and warming the engine up, saw bubbles every 5 seconds.
Decided to take the truck to the dealership and 2 days later they came back with head gasket issue on cylinder #6.
Was given a rough quote via email. Labor = $3,150 (25hr), Parts = $926.00 (includes water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, timing chain center sprocket assy, oil pan fipg, head gasket kit, coolant, oil and etc.) On top of that, was quoted $1,200 to clean, inspect and machine the heads.
I requested the dealer to provide me a detailed breakdown of the pricing.
Anyone know of a good independent shop in the LA, SGV or OC area in SoCal?

I called Toyota corporate today and reported the head gasket failure on my truck. I implore you all to do the same if you haven't yet. The customer service rep made it very clear, to the point of reiterating it multiple times, that if enough reports are made toyota will respond. So please call. 800-331-4331

Hi, I found this forum when I started googling after I had trouble getting my HG diagnosed. At this point, they have verified that I have a leak and it's affecting the usual cylinder (6). A boroscope test at one shop showed scoring in the cylinder. My main shop is going to do their own boroscope test. Is some scoring in the cylinder correlated to the HG issue? Everything else matches the typical HG problem. Is this problem usually permanently fixed by replacing the HG? I don't mind the cost of the repair but I want to know if there is a negative prognosis post repair. Thanks!

Replacing the head gasket should be as permanent of a fix as there is. Nothing lasts forever, but if it's done right you should never have to do it again.
It won't help with the scored cylinder walls.

Just making sure my understanding is right: so far no 08, 09 owners reported a HG fail, right? only one so far 2007, only 2 2003?
