Can anyone help me? Just purchased my first 4Runner two days ago (05 SR5 v6 / 149k miles) and today the check engine light came on along with the VSC OFF and TRAC light. According to other people on this forum with this issue, it seems that they most commonly resolved it by replacing an 02 sensor (not sure which one). I decided to take my car to AutoZone anyways to run diagnostic and the code that came up was P0306 "Cylinder 6 misfire detected." However based upon this diagnostic code I looked up, it seems that it could be something as simple as a spark plug or more serious like an early sign of a blown head gasket. Not sure what do to. Any advice would be amazing. Thx :sad:

So far so good, was wondering if maybe all these HG problems have happened in cold climate places??? Or high humidity? Im in the southwest sun shines 300 days a year. Was looking at prices and seems to be cheaper if you just buy the Surfire heads from autozone and the HG kit from rockauto along with the timing chain kit. Just a thought. Hell if you really love you're rig an entire engine from autozone as well runs for about 4,800-5700. Finally can a class action lawsuit be filled against Toyota. As another member here stated Toyota just "felt" like revising HG from one moth to the next, sounds like they knew about it.

I doubt very much that a lawsuit would be successful. Nothing lasts forever. As much as it sucks for all of us that have had this problem, these trucks are 10 or more years old with more than 100k miles on them. They all went well past their warranty period and the manufacturer doesn't owe a buyer (original or otherwise) any kind of lifetime warranty.
If Toyota ever does address this issue and tries to make it right, it would be completely out of their desire to maintain their brand image and the resale value that goes along with it.
Sounds about right. I think 06 is pretty safe too.
A lot of times when all of those lights come on it is a loose gas cap. Tighten it until it clicks three or four times. Drive it a few times and see if it goes off.
If you do have a head gasket issue it's most likely going to run a little rough when you first start it and then after 10-30 seconds run normally.
Hey guys I've been on the lookout for a 4th gen 4R around my area VA/DC. So far I've seen several ranging from 80k-170k miles and all have a HG leak. I've been using a UVIEW 560000 Combustion Leak Tester to make sure so far they have tested positive. Saw one today its a slow leak because it took a little while to show up but was there.
I'm heading up to DC next week. Want to test mine for me? I changed out the coolant with Asian by Zerex and it took awhile for the air to work itself out because the coolant level slowly dropped for several weeks but is holding steady now. 04 limited 182000. I was worried.

Never did a leak test just yet. No problem with head gasket just yet. Never changed coolant since purchase in 05 and transmission fluid. Never changed the serpentine belt yet or ignition coils. Didn't change out spark plugs since 100k miles. Only problem I had was the 02 sensors.

Got it tested and the read out was a misfire on cylinder #3, so I replaced the coil and spark plug and the code cleared. Now as of 3 weeks ago I've gone through 2 1/2 gallons of coolant. Could all of this be associated with a HG failure? Any advise would greatly appreciated!

It sure sounds like a head gasket issue to me. If you don't have a huge puddle of coolant on the garage floor, then all that fluid has to be going somewhere.
I would think you'd have to have a hell of a leak to lose that much and I'd think you'd have way more than a couple hard starts. Usually the leak is on 6 or 4. Are you don't have a bad water pump or leak somewhere else?
This was mine after sitting overnight. It would have taken months to use a gallon.

That's what I thought, a huge leak. I just don't see anything. Nothing on the ground after leaving it off overnight, but I do smell coolant after driving for like 10 min+ leading me to think there is a leak. As for hard starts, now its happening maybe 2/3 times a day. Its more of a slightly rough idle for 30 seconds, than a hard start. Could the coolant be puddling on the skid plate then flying off while driving?
That's what I was getting with my head gasket failure. Although, I don't think I ever lost enough coolant to drain the overflow tank. We verified the failure with a borescope. We were not able to verify by testing the radiator for gasses.
Sounds like a possible head gasket. But don't replace it without verification.
Update, got a code for cylinder 5 misfire a couple of nights back, borescoped that cylinder and seen fluid seeping in. I also did a block test but that came back negative for hydrocarbons. So, took into the shop and they pressurized the coolant system, upon start up they got misfires in both cyl 5 & 6. Think I may be the first with a failure on the passenger side.
