I don't think the order date is the same as the build date.
Mine has a build date of 11/05 and so far so good (change coolant often!).
How many miles are on this 06? Also, can the seller confirm that the 4wd shifts smoothly and has no issues going into low or center diff lock?

He sent me a pic of the plate inside of the door. It is in fact 07/06, so in this case it was the same as the order date.
It has 181K miles. Not low, but not terrible for a 12 year old vehicle I suppose. About average I would say. Clean 4th gens are extremely difficult to find in my area.

Mine will hit 200k this year, probably in April or May (lots of driving coming up). When people ride in it, they are SHOCKED it has more than 40k miles. Other than the head gasket, mine has been amazing.

The one I am looking at has 187K. It is very clean with about 80 service records on Carfax. The vast majority has been performed at the local Toyota dealer.

Update, 150 miles after head gasket repair, vacuum leak CEL. Service manager at Toyota says "totally unrelated." Subtly called him out on BS, they either split a hose and didn't replace it or didn't fasten it correctly. Why would they slack on putting engine back in??? Total hassle. Salisbury MD must have Greg Brady back there with extra parts bin...

So today when I was grocery shopping I left my truck for about 20-30 min outside and after restarting the engine I heard water splashing/gurgling and I'm pretty sure it wasn't anything in the trunk making this sound. Only for a few seconds until it was gone, otherwise no other symptoms.

Have you checked your coolant levels? Mine started doing that a few months ago and got me worried. Topped off the coolant, ran the heater, topped again and it been fine ever since. Coolant level hasnt changed, sound is gone, and analysis from Blackstone says oil looks good

If it was a head gasket, that would only happen when the Runner is cold. I agree with ThatSickRip, it sounds like your coolant level is just low.

I check level cold and hot and it's fine, I don't know why it made the noise. Hopefully it's a false alarm. I got to change the coolant just because.

So I just bought a 2004 v6 limited 4x4 with 120,xxx miles. After 1,000 miles of ownership it overheated. Radiator was blocked up, flowed 8 gallons a minute when it should flow 17-18 gallons a minute. After a bit more driving, it was pushing coolant from the radiator to the overflow tank and not cycling back, and coolant smelled like exhaust. Sure enough the head gasket is failed on driver side, cylinder 2. Didn't get a warranty with the vehicle but the dealership felt pretty bad about it and is covering a large amount of cost.

I have a 2004 SR5. Bought it in 2006 with 18k miles on it and have had it ever since. Nothing but oil changes and tire replacements.. 2 battery replacements. Head gasket failed on number 4 cylinder at 248k miles. It's never overheated and the oil has never turned black. Even today with 291k miles the oil is still gold when you pull the oil stick out. Both head gaskets, and water pump was replaced along with heads being machined at machine shop. Looking to get another 250k out of it... Just replaced the front wheel/hubs that I purchased from Rock Auto at a great price so there isn't much left to do to it now... Will buy another 4runner if this one ever bites the dust but will keep it going as long as I can......

I would say you did very well even if the head gasket failed, getting 248,000 miles out of it with nothing but normal stuff being done, you got your money's worth for sure, the cost even though not cheap to replace the gaskets will also be money well spend IMHO!!

New to this forum and new to Toyota ownership. I recently purchased privately a 2005 4Runner with 158,000 on it, single owner in the town I live. Everything about it seems great, especially for being a new england vehicle all these years. I even spoke to the local mechanic who has worked on this for the previous owner, and he says she always cared for the vehicle.
After digging deeper into the thing, I noticed an exhaust smell in the coolant overflow. I came on here and in a matter of minutes found all these problems. I plugged in my OBD, and of course I found P0306 pending. Misfire in cylinder 6. I talked to a mechanic on the phone, and he says I need to swap the coil etc to see if the code moves, and don't jump to conclusions. That makes me trust him more, since hes not trying to jump on the opportunity to take the huge job. He said hes willing to do the work if need be, and the estimated price, at least over the phone, was great.
Its not losing coolant or overheating or anything like that, which has me thinking I may have caught the issue relatively early. I thought about letting it ride for a while until I actually threw a code, but also don't want to risk creating further issues. Based on my reading here, it seems like there's no chance I get lucky, and a blown head gasket is clearly the issue.
I can't believe how common this issue is. Has Toyota not addressed this because the vehicles are older now? Yet, they replaced everyone's dashboards?!?

Just all theory and conjecture...
The thinking I have had on this is that if you drove 100k miles in the first 5 or so years of new T4R ownership, chances are good that the antifreeze was changed out.
Hence it never had a chance to become acidic and degrade the HG.
That 'Life time' product name idea was bad naming structure.
I still am not at 100k almost 15 years later.
Some one just posted a 2010 T4R with possible HG fail...he had never changed the antifreeze, was a low miles runner. 8 years with the same fluids.
Come on guys that's just neglect. I am bad too I went over 6 before the first change...doh.
I still have a 5gal bucket in the garage with the original antifreeze, if anyone wants to test it. I guess I could send it somewhere...probably wont.

Getting mine replaced this week at a local shop, about $1800 and then we will add in some parts that should be replaced. Water pump, thermostat etc.

This shows the 4.0 V6 timing chain replacement, which seems very relevant to most of the tear down if one choose to attempt the head gasket repair or just wanted to see some of the task.
