*** V6 Head Gasket Action Request ***

So 3 motors, all 3 failed head gaskets.
Back story bought a 06 runner with a blown motor, called my buddy for a used motor. He found me one with low miles for 2500. Pulled the trigger on it, it had been tested prior to removal from the totaled vehicle. Got a 6 month 5k mile warranty. Replaced the motor trans radiator etc. runs great for about a week, then the check engine light. Did testing came back hg. Called the company we got the motor from, no questions they send over another one. Replace the motor again. Runs great for about a month and 1k miles then the dang check engine light again. Yep another hg!!! My mechanic says bring it back in. So original motor went bad from a hg, 2 low mileage used ones same issue.
I finally just baught some cometic steel hg, and redid the heads on the first replacement motor since it had the lowest miles (12k). I’m now 6 months into this motor and about 5k miles with zero issues since.

This hg issue is rediculous, Toyota should step up and fix these.

That’s crazy!

Could it be something in the cooling system?? Unreal that one person could have 3!! Sorry brother.

The '05's and early '06's (built through November of 2005) seem to have a disproportionate number of HG failures from what I've seen.

I did replace the cooling system, flushed it out and refilled with factory pink antifreeze each time. Can’t be the cooling system, I ruled that out after the second motor.

How has the sealer treatment held up?

I used Blue Devil HG sealer around 2 weeks ago (500 miles) and haven't experienced a problem since. My 4Runner wasn't overheating or having a problems at all, but a leak down test by a mechanic confirmed HG leak. I created a thread on here to document my process and keep tabs on how long it lasts. Time will tell!

How are you going to measure the effectiveness of the treatment if you didn't have symptoms?

I explain everything in more detail in my thread. Basically the only thing I could note that was consistently telling me HG leak was the sound of rushing water behind the dash. This has stopped since I used HG sealer. When it comes back, I'll know.

Is there a link to your thread 4thTRDRunner?
I have a 2003 4runner and have had a blown head gasket for over 200k
Minor misfire at startup until yesterday. Now it miss's at idle when warm. I am now thinking on using some mechanic in a can. @434k miles not sure a rebuild is in our future..... :(

I’m not sure how to post a link in this forum but a search for “Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealer” on the forum search will bring everything up. It’s fairly recent and has a full description of everything I’ve done with the sealer.

2004 4runner
V6

P0306 misfire #6
Starts rough on a cold start and idles fine.
Took it to a dealer and they said head gasket.
Sucks because theres so many with issues and no recall. They recalled a small crack on the dashes but not this, or the rusted frames. But they recalled the same generation for tacomas and sequoias.

Toyota or any auto manufacturer will only replace and or repair out of warranty items and other issues if enough owners file a complaint offically with them, in this case Toyota Corporate Headquarters, it's numbers that count in these cases, with the dashes, which in my case was more then a tiny crack, my dash look like a roadmap becasue of all the cracks, but enough owners filed a complaint with Toyota and got a offical case number for their complaint that Toyota was overwhelmed to the point that they did a dash replacement program, and the same with the rear hatch window defoster causing the glass to shatter.

Apparently they haven't reached the complaint number threshold yet on the V6 head gaskets and bad frames, there maybe some small hope on the frames but time will tell I guess.

I would say you've done pretty well to have almost a half million miles on it.

Clean up on Aisle 6

Got my truck back this morning after the head gasket replacement.

I think I got a reasonable price considering it was the dealer.

On to the new lift and suspension work.

Local dealership wants 5725. For an loaded head
Cylinder 3 is unusual, it's usually 6. $5725 seems very high. I paid $4k and that included rebuilt heads, new water pump, hoses, belts, and a radiator. Oh, and my exhaust was turned out the side.

Started Rough, then ran OK. Decided to do the job myself. Ended up pulling the motor out for various reasons.

Has anyone ever measured the head and the block for warping? Sure sounds like the head needs to be milled to get everything back to flat. A warped head will just continue to blow gaskets for all time.

When replacing these head gaskets the heads should be checked by a machine shop for being true and or machined so that they are, any shop that doesn't do so is incompetent, the block rarely warps unless the engine was extremely over heated.

My mechanic did. The block was straight. The heads were off by like .00001 mm so they got a light re-touching and had the valve seats and valves cleaned.

So purdy!!
