I'm having a really difficult time removing both of the bolts! I don't know if I'm not using the correct tools but what is the best way to remove these damn things?!?!?!?

The 14mm box wrench slipped off once and so did the 14mm socket once, so now it's almost rounded there is still good meat if you come at it perfectly straight on. I removed the wheel, wheel well side cover, and the bottom skid plate so I can access the bolts from the side or underneath. I also moved the solid brake lines out of the way by removing the 3 brackets. The only items in the way now are the steering shaft and exhaust manifold.

I searched and read a couple posts that said long extension and angle head ratchet, is this the best way? I didn't find any diy's...are the fjcrusier's the same as ours maybe i'll research those starter removals.

Anyway's I'm giving up for now, both bolts are drenched in penetrating lube hopefully that will loosen them up for me tomorrow.

If someone can post up some links of what tools specifically are needed it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I feel your pain bro! Mine was under the intake manifold and I had about 2 inches of space to get those 2 bolts out. Man, I was spread out on the engine, back hurting and cuts on back of my hands. I remember looking at the youtube starter removal. Not much space there as well. Hopefully the liquid wrench will loosen it up for you. You probably looked at this already

Check out my pain!

Dang Mike that looks crazy! That's crazy you need to remove the intake manifold to replace the starter.

Also yeah I saw that video but he doesn't really show how he go to the 2 bolts. Hopefully I'll have better luck tomorrow.

V6 starter removal.... Impact 6 point swivel socket, extensions to about trans. support at angle downward. A good impact. Out it comes.

UPDATE: So I was finally able to remove the 2 starter bolts. I researched on the FJ forums and someone mentioned unbolting the front drive shaft and moving it out of the way. That exactly what I did, removed the 4 bolts pushed it out of the way and was able to put a 3/8 ratchet w/ a 3in extension, and cheater bar over the ratchet to break the bolts loose. There was more than enough room, man ol man was that a pain in the butt to figure out.

I managed to round one of the bolts a little bit with my previous failed attempts, so I'm going to order a new one so I won't have any problems next time.

Here are some pics of the internal contacts. I was expecting worse but after some copper corrosion cleaner and new contacts/ plunger this starter should fire like new.

Thanks for sharing! Your photos are not accessible anymore. Would you please re-upload them, probably somewhere else?
