V8 Conversion (Canadian Made)

My supercharged 5VZ-FE is running great, nothing wrong with it at all. Except the price of premium gas and trying to sort out where to buy said premium gas while on road trips to random / butt-fu** nowhere locations. So, in comes the V8 swap.

Singtoe has done a great job of showing how 'simple' the swap can be and so when both of these vehicles (a 2001 4Runner identical to mine besides interior colour and a 2003 Tundra V8) fell in to my lap, I couldn't pass them up. A long term project was born.

I will be stripping the 4Runner first (I have the most interest in the parts for it in order to fund this venture) and then working on the Tundra.

This swap should be within my capabilities but I will be relying on help from anyone who is willing to lend an educated opinion. The only thing I hope to outsource is the welding of motor mounts, transmission mount and exhaust headers. Everything else I hope to tackle on my own, given enough time.

Watching, waiting, take lots of pics!!!

I'm going to be taking my time and trying to get the girlfriend to document / photograph things as they progress.

Hopefully my attention to detail shows through - I want to make sure this goes as smoothly as possible when it all comes together.

I want to do this soo badly but the wiring scares the crap out of me :moping:

I went back and read through Singtoe's build again.... Wow yes, the wiring is a huge challenge! It appeared the mechanical issues took far less time to overcome than the electrical issues!! From Singtoes posts he chose the most challenging swap when you look at the AC and instrumentation issues--- he mentions that swapping from a Tundra may have been less complicated due to the electrical obstacles. He said the Tundra's electrical systems were more functionally similar to the 4Runner, where as, the Sequioa was very different-- more electronics---- For Singtoe, I imagine this just made the job more rewarding!!!

I read that as well. The problem is Sequioa's can had cheaper the Tundra but I would hold out for a Tundra just because of the wiring. I wish I didn't have to deal with smog, it would make life easier...damn gov. The funny thing is I'm getting ready to do a 3.4 swap into my '73 Ford Courier. So that will give me some wiring experience that will help me in future. I can read the diagrams but I have no idea what I can get rid of and what needs to stay. That's we're I'm lost. Lol

I hope to have both wiring harness completely labeled and laid out in front of me so I can determine the differences between them and decide where splicing is required.

Hopefully this thread will end up being of some help to those who are thinking of doing this.

Look forward to seeing it built and if you need any advice, feel free to ask...

Just those motor mounts!

I think I'll have the transmission mount fabbed up and then hold the engine in place to measure up the mounts... Is that the method which you used and the offset of the transmission crossmember was sufficient for clearance?

A 3.4L (and tranny, I assume) swap into a Courier??? LOL!!
By the time you finish with this, you'll be ready to give the 4Runner V8 swap, a shot! Luckily, in my region we have no SMOG, so I didn't have to worry about the age of the replacement etc., Good luck!

You are soo lucky not having to deal with smog. That alone makes me want to move sometimes.

End of high jack! Sorry to OP
