V8 swap

Did I mention the part where these were all cars I've been in and lived with?
Three different corvettes an old 85 chevy cavalier (driven during my step dads divorce with is previous wife) which was passed to my older brother at 250k who then drove it to 275k then he sold it to another guy who managed to lose control and park it in someone's front yard. My mom upgraded to a chevy Malibu which was driver to 150k miles while owning a chevy Tahoe which was driven considerably less due to fuel economy. These were both eventually traded in for a chevy avalanche and chevy impala both driven to over 160k miles the impala was tolaled and they got another one with similar miles and put it to around 215k miles before selling it.
I neglected to mention ford because I personally have not had any firsthand experience with them. Just Chevys and toyotas..
The only dodge/Chrysler I had experience with is a 2013 Chrysler 300S which developed alignment problems within 10k miles..

And where did I say toyotas weren't efficient..? Lol...
They are very good engines. I just don't like supercharging. If it were the more efficient and cheaper way to do things wouldn't you think car manufacturers would have been moving into it instead of away from it? Don't get me wrong superchargers do have their place. But that place isn't everywhere.
And my bad on the tdi numbers I looked back at them and forgot to fix them on the thread. I was way off lol. And as for efficiency numbers, just using numbers I've seen over the Internet, if you know more accurate numbers please feel free to let me know.

And Ed_C yeah I made that mistake and learned from it. Your post isn't a constructive one. And in the aspect I was looking at it it could also work.
Less air in, less fuel burned, also needs more back pressure. Think about reversing performance adders. More power more fuel pess power less fuel.
A lot of manufacturers HAVE gone to supercharging over displacement. You're making the mistake of thinking every car owner is performance minded. Not everybody wants or needs additional power that supercharging can offer. The New ZO6 Corvette- supercharged.
ZR1 Corvette- Supercharged
Camaro ZL1- Supercharged
GT500 Mustang-Supercharged
Mini Cooper S- Supercharged
Etc......

Hell, I work for Infiniti, and our QX60 hybrids are supercharged. Why are you having issues with efficiency? So it uses a bit of power to spin a blower, big deal. The return in horsepower gains more than makes up for the loss.

I mean, it's not like you're sacrificing 50hp to make 40hp. Sacrificing 20 or 30hp to make an additional 150hp seems like a no brainer.

One of the smaller displacement ones uses a different cylinder head internal design for that engine an using it on the 350 increases compression.

This may sound nitpicky, and it has nothing to do with the OP, but that's really not accurate either. Combustion chamber size in the head isn't displacement specific either in the SBC and the same head design may have been used on several sizes of engines. There are way too many variables for a blanket statement like that quoted.

Yeah there was a lot more to it I didn't incorperate from the original post because I don't remember where I saw it an can't find it lol.
They gave a list of cars and years and engine sizes and what exactly to look for. Sorry for quoting it so vaguely.

That's just a 1uz, without any performance modifications, a 1uz would be kind of a step sideways from the 3.4, but it's a definite upgrade for a 3.0 2nd gen.

It is big step foward not sideways. Now if you had a supercharger, then it would be side ways stock for stock.

That's an old 1uz, but still better than the 3.4 and leaps better than the 3 liter. If you were to get a 1uz from a gs400, then you've got 300hp. There was quite a variance from the old 1uz's to the "later" ones in the GS for example.
 
The oldest 1UZ's have the best connecting rods which is a major plus if you intend on going with forced induction. It is without a doubt a step forward. The 1UZ is lighter and makes more power.

That's kind of what I meant, the 1UZ isn't really a powerhouse in stock form, you wouldn't have to do much for the 5VZ to keep up, but I always forget the 1UZ is an aluminum block too, so there's some weight savings.

Don't get me wrong the 1UZ is a great motor, I plan on running one in my Corona when the time comes.

Fwiw turbochargers are more efficient at making power than a supercharger. A superchager is driven off the engine which requires tq to turn tq taken from the engine. I think it was like 30% of the engines power at the wheels is taken to drive the supercharger. So if you are making 100whp 30whp is being taken by the supercharger. A turbo is "free" power being that it uses the engery in the hot expanding exhaust gases to drive it or build boost pressure. So nit stealing power from the engine alone always a turbo to make more power at the same boost as a super charger. Turbos are also typically intercooled which increases power by increasing efficiency from cooling the air charge. Superchargers like the trd are not intercooled and basically are blowing hot air into the motor. All that said i would go with the trd supercharger on a 3.4l toyota.

Also, I would add that superchargers are belt driven, and their rotating speed is directly proportional to engine speed, so they do have a powerband. All "pumps" have a speed where they are most efficient where the energy required/ flow produced is at the best ratio. So with an SC, you will usually be below or above the most efficient engine speed. With a turbo being free spinning with the turbine wheel speed dependent on the input flow, and the primary restriction is the pump action of the compressor side, it will balance it's speed between the input and output pressure and will ALWAYS be turning at its natural, most efficient speed for the flow. That's another main reason a turbo is more efficient when we are talking the true definition of efficiency.
 
I actually just joined this forum to find some info on a V8 swap for my 94 Runner. I recently bought it with it already having a 7.5" lift, some portion of a land cruiser suspension in the rear, with spartan lockers front and rear and geared for 34 inch super swampers. It's got 254k miles on the engine that was rebuilt at 180k, and I'm getting symptoms of a leaking head gasket. I'm sure we'd all be in agreement that the 3.0 is way under powered as I can't even do the speed limit when driving up the mountains here in CO. I'm still not sure what route I'm going yet. Pretty much between the 1UZ or a 350. I've read so much stuff and have found a 94 SC400 that a person only wants $870 for because it broke a timing belt, and I keep getting mixed information on whether or not it's an interference engine and if there is possible valve or piston damage. I'm getting some ridiculous quotes like $9000 just to rebuild the engine if I just drop the motor off to them. I know I can get the engine online but I heard it's better to get a donor car so I can use the air box, fuel lines, fuel pump and all the other misc necessities. Not having much luck finding another donor car so I'm leaning towards the 350 swap and have been on the phone with Northwest and they seem to think putting in an EFI 350 is too much work with an additional cost of around $800 which I'm assuming is mostly for the cost of a wire harness. I would really prefer not to mess with carbs, so what I'm really needing to know is what complete 350 engine to look for, because I'm sure they all have different intake manifolds for the EFI ones. Id also like to keep a manual tranny. I am pretty mechanically inclined but have never messed with drivetrain components other than dropping a few trannies to change out clutches and flywheels. I don't know much about compatibility and modifications.
