Vail bound...

Moving to Vail, CO for three months next week. Hoping to plan a trip to Moab and some other places during our time there too. Having the beast serviced on Monday, and headed out of here Tues. Huge kudos to my wife for making this possible because she landed a job at the hospital there, and they hooked us up with a 3 bedroom place right in town. Anybody have advice for best place to buy high quality used ski gear on the way there? Anybody on here live up in Summit County? All advice appreciated.

Congrats! The next three months are the snowyest typically of the season! Cross your fingers that we continue to get more snow.

Get a ski pass... it is waaaaaaaay cheaper than paying $100 bucks a day to ski.

On the Front Range this place Boulder Sports Recycler in Boulder typically has great gear.

These guys are a bit closer in Frisco Recycle Ski & Sport. I haven't done business with them, but they have a decent rating on Yelp.

Also keep an eye on Craigslist as a lot of folks turn over their gear on a regular basis out here.

Little confused as to the short time frame... is your wife's job temporary, is it long term and they put you up for the first three months while you look for a place on your own?

Either way, I'm sure you will have a blast! Good luck with the move and jealous of all the snow driving you are going to get.

I'm over on the front range but am out to the resorts a couple times a month. My season pass is to Keystone but I could see a trip a little further west for some southern hospitality (Im from KY originally but was in SC for the last 5 years). I'll try and remember to PM you before my next trip out that way,

You'll love it! I live in Colorado Springs and have family up in Avon/Eagle-Vail so I'm up there all the time. It's beautiful country

My wife is a nurse. She just finished NP graduate program, and it will be a few months until she gets her NP license, so she applied for a seasonal job in Vail, and due to her awesomeness, she got the gig...apparently, it is quite the coveted temporary job. She is filling in for a nurse who is on maternity leave...so I guess it is not technically seasonal...the dates just happen to be perfect.

I'm just down the street in Avon/Edwards. You should start with rental gear.

I am an experienced skier, have skied CO many times, among other places, so I am looking for a sweet pair of skis that I can own. Might try to demo some first though...or pick up a used set of demos from last year or something...is there a place near Vail that I can do that where it would not be super over-priced? The place in Frisco might work, but I worry about being able to take them back if they don't work, etc...

Have fun! Are you moving back afterward or looking for something more permanent?
Would love to stay in CO, but probably won't be able to swing that...it is possible we could stay longer than April though until she gets a job back in Charleston.

Do you even own a long sleeve shirt ? Safe trip and post pics :car:
LOL! Definitely don't need many of those around here, but I grew up in the Mountains of VA, so I am pretty well prepared. I miss the mountains so much that I refused to get rid of all my warm clothes.

100 bucks for Vail, that would be a bargin! The window price is now 129, just say no to Vail!
Ya Vail is not ideal, but our place is right across I-70 from the Village, so during the week, if I have time to ski, probably will hit Vail, and then on weekends, probably will go other places, Abasin, Keystone, Steamboat, etc.

I love Keystone! They gave us a 3br unit right in Vail because it was the only one that allows pets, so bring it on...where did you live in SC?

I will try to use this thread as a bog of pics and stuff from our journey...stay tuned...

Welcome to CO! (unless you vote Democrat:whipping2)

You'll find many consignment shops full of good used gear. The beauty part of living up in Vail is that you can get a steal for goods leftover from rich Europeans who never took the skis off the groomers.

Thanks. Good point. FWIW, I am a Republican. We leave tomorrow. Just got the rig back from the dealer for its 30k and all seems in order.

They also like to buy new gear instead of renting, even if they only use it for a week. Which, to their credit, it's cheaper than renting in most cases! Tons of deals in Vail, but you gotta have the hookups!

Don't let the haters dissuade you: VAIL IS AWESOME (can't use the 'E' word since they trademarked it, LOL)

You will find Vail haters all over the web. Let them go away in disgust--more powder for us. I envy you to be living there. If you drive elsewhere to ski (unless its the Beav), you will be doing a disservice to yourself. EVERY resort has crowds on the weekend, but Vail has enough acreage to find your own little stash. It is amazing at how quickly Steamboat turns into a 'small mountain' on a weekend.

BTW, most employers offer a discounted 'Chamber of Commerce' pass. I would think the Hospital offers this.

I know it is awesome...have skied it several times. Only once since they added BSB though. Thanks for the insight. We are working on getting me a pass. The hospital is telling us they can't even get passes for permanent employees' spouses...so I am probably SOL. I will try to chamber thing though...we shall see...
