WHEN PERFORMING A VALVE CLEARANCE CHECK AFTER DOING THE FIRST STEP OF NUMBER 1 AND 2 INTAKE AND NUMBER 1 AND 3 EXHAUST, THE BOOK SAYS TO SPIN CRANK 360 AND CHECK NUMBER 3 AND 4 INTAKE AND 2 AND 4 EXHAUST. MY PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN I GET TO THE SECOND STEP THE NUMBER 2 EXHAUST AND THE NUMBER 3 INTAKE VALVES ARE OPEN. CAN THESE VALVES BE ADJUSTED THIS WAY. I HAVE TURNED THE CRANK SEVERAL TIMES AND MADE SURE THAT I STARTED THE WHOLE PROCESS WITH NUMBER 1 CYLINDER AT TDC. PLEASE HELP. THANKS

WORKING ON A 22RE. 94 4RUNNER
Have you considered the possibility that the cylinders are numbered differently? You can't set the clearance on an open valve, thats a given.

That's what I thought, that's why it's driving me crazy. I've read both the Chiltons and Hanes manuals that willsep3241 has and also all over the internet but can't figure out what the deal is. And it's not because I don't know what I'm doing, I have a feeling that it's something really stupid that I'm just thinking to hard about it. Thanks for any help you can give us. Later

Could it possibly be firing order that you need? Why not just adjust the valves when they are not on the cam IE when they are closed?

That's what I did the first time; I put the #1 at TDC and adjusted it, then rotated the crank so that the #3 (next in the firing order)was at TDC and adjusted it, and so on ,and so on. The problem was that it was really noisy, sounded like a rod knock. The reason we are doing this is because the head gasket went out. Anyway I just want to make sure that I'm adjusting the valves right before diagnosing the noise. Unless this noise is normal right after you do a head gasket job and have the oil and water out of the engine for a long period of time (couple days)? Later
