Valve Cover Gasket

317,000 on 03 V8. Valve cover on driver side is leaking at back left corner. Ordered new gasket, silicone, tube seals and pcv valve from Toyota. Couple questions:

1. Do the Valve Cover bolts have a rubber washer/grommet on bolt that should be replaced also? There are 9 of them on the cover.

2. How long does the silicone need to set up before I can run the engine?

Can’t remember how long I let the silicone setup. Probably over night.

I did not replace any of the rubber grommets on mine. I actually lost one of the bolts and replaced it with a regular bolt with no grommet and have never had a problem, had about 300k miles when I replaced them and it’s been about 20k miles since replacement.

I replaced both gaskets, they were both leaking. I would replace the plugs then if you need to and get some brake cleaner to clean the valve covers before you put them back on.

Easy job, just take your time.

Thanks Myers. Ended up purchasing new Toyota grommets along with the pcv, tube seals and new gasket. Put the Toyota sealant in the corners by the cam gear and re-siliconed the half moons on the opposite side of the head. All went well. Toughest thing was finding the right angle, extension length to retorque the valve cover bolts.

Hoping no more leak...

Just out of curiosity, roughly what was the total cost for parts to replace all the gaskets/seals/grommets etc for this project? OEM?

I only did the cover that was leaking so if you are going to do both banks then you would have to double up cost with the exception of the sealant. Approximations:

Gasket-$13
PCV-$8
Grommets-$12
Toyota Sealant-$15
Tube Seals-$14

So approx, $62. You wouldn’t need the PCV on the other side too so about $100 in materials for both sides. I know there is a Fel-Pro kit out there for probably half the price but I chose to use the Toyota stuff. If it lasted over 300k miles then you know it’s good.
