Geez, $200 for a crank? Allrighty then. I'll have a look at the bearings in the morning and then figure out which way I'm gonna jump.
If the plastiguage fails, I would pull the engine and tear it down completely.
Rebuild, wooo! I am actually enjoying driving my truck now with the rebuild, head/cam. Go for it!
You're in that thing quite a bit man. sucks. Don't worry... I may be getting into mine sooner than I'd like as well. Valve ticking or something is getting worse.
so, is it lateral movement (side to side) or up and down? That would be a sound theory though.
How long of a drive is it from Taylorsville to wherever it is you live, anyway?

Those bearings look pretty close to new, how did the bolts feel when loosening them? have you checked all the other bearings yet?
I think it was the rv, its the one that's ported with everything upgraded. Went with the 268 cam, stock gearing with 33s and she pulls up hillls no problem. Love the new setup
You can use a feeler gauge to measure the thrust bearing clearance, the plastigauge is for the bearing to crankshaft pin clearance. I would recommend when measuring the thrust bearing clearance to reinstall the crankshaft and gently lever the crank shaft back and forth (from front to back) then torque the caps down and measure your thrust clearance.
How does the engine run when you're driving it? Does it have a smooth power band? Does it seem like it falls flat on its face at about 3500 to 4000 rpm? When did you notice that ticking sound?
The reason why I asked how your engine runs is because if you have a bad power band or if the engine falls on its face at 3500 rpm and up is because those are symptoms of a timing issue. Timing issue as in stretched chain or being off a tooth, ect. When I say "falls on its face" I mean does it lose pretty much all of its power. You should feel a good steady pull of power all the way up to 4500 rpm. You also have head work and a cam in your engine, right? If that is the case then you should have good power all the way to 5000 rpm or so.
The head is stock, with a 263 cam. If it had been off a tooth it would run rough at idle, wouldn't it? And I'm honestly having a hard time imagining a stretched chain with the newish guides I found.
But I do feel like the torque would start to fall off between 3000 and 3500, and even with the 5.29s I couldn't get it past 75 on the flat (around 3300 rpm), so maybe you're onto something.
