Valve lash again

Well FFS.

I spent yesterday morning digging through a pick and pull for an assortment of factory bolts in the right size to replace the inexplicably too-long bolts I had, because the hardware store didn't have 'em.

I get out this morning, I'm cranking on the timing cover, I set up the water and oil pump, I'm bolting on the alternator, I'm bolting on the PS pump, I'm grabbing the AC bracket out of the pile and tossing it aside because I'm not putting the AC back on yet... wait. AC bracket.

all of the lower left timing cover bolts are bottoming out before they snug the cover up.

It's the AC bracket. It goes on the

lower left timing cover

Guess how it does that? The "too long" timing cover bolts. :censored:

I'm doing a slow burn. It's a good thing I'm home by myself, because there's no way I'm any kind of fit company right now.

So here's a pro tip. If you're buttoning up your timing cover, and you're feeling pretty good about getting to know your motor better, you might get to thinking "who the heck needs a paper gasket" and decide to just smear the back of your cover with gasket maker. If you did that, you might want to make sure to get the little fin underneath the coolant intake pipe. If by some chance you didn't get that part, you'll weep coolant out the bolt hole below the water pump (and probably into the oil too), and this will get you very confused and then you will become a sailor and start throwing things and have to take the damned cover back off to do it right.

Now I'm not saying that's what happened today, this is more of a public service announcement in case somebody else got cocky and started going too fast. You know. If.

Jesus but I'm no good at this stuff.

I've got a knock. I can start to hear it around 1800ish rpm, it's quite pronounced at 2200 or so and gets louder the higher I take the rpms.

I was very careful to retorque all the bearing caps underneath before I buttoned it back up - does this sound like some spare RTV has clogged up an oil galley? What else can cause a knocking sound at higher RPM? If it is a clogged oil passage, is there any solution besides tearing the entire thing down? Because that's what I'm getting ready to do. I'm tired of this motor's BS and I think I'm going to start looking for a shop crane and yank that beeotch out of there.

You sure it's a knock coming from the bottom end? If not, take a long screw driver or a long extension and it it n the engine block and your ear to narrow down where he noise is coming from.

I can't really reach anywhere and blip the throttle at the same time. I've got a PM into Mike, I'm hoping he's in town and I can bribe him into coming over and lending a hand.

Where else would it be coming from, though? I didn't touch the valves, and nothing in the front would make the noise I'm hearing.

I kind of figured so. I bet that nasty coolant/oil mix ate some bearings though. A little surprised it did it so quickly though.

i would say you ruined the new bearings by only installing 1/2 of i tand running it. you can tap the rod up and roll the old bearing out. You can roll the mains out but it isnt as easy as the rods. Be carfull not to scratch the crank. If i was you i would plastigage the new bearings to make sure you have the proper clearance.

bearings are OK I believe. I talked to him earlier today but not sure of the outcome. I think it was pretty good news though.
