Vented 5th gen hood - Extreme

Definitely not my thing.. well, not entirely anyways. I'm a detail oriented person and just from looking how the mesh work is uneven is enough to make me start twitching. About the most extreme hood I can palate is the Rubi Hard Rock ventilated hood..

I guess by your definition suspension upgrades aren't functional either? Why replace your stock suspension when it does just fine for everything most people do. Everyone should just get spacer lifts. Increasing tire size isn't functional for rock crawling because it negatively effects your center of gravity.

How is hood venting not functional? Why do performance cars have it if it's not? Apparently it is okay to buy race level offroad shocks and throw them on your truck, everyone thinks its BA. But as soon as you throw a race level hood on your truck everyone hates on it. How much mud do you really get ON YOUR HOOD when wheeling. I don't get very much. Even with this vented hood you would still get more mud on your engine from underneath and from the wheel wells. But I'm guessing he didn't buy this hood to go mudding or do water crossings with... Not everyone can be a super duper offroader like you guys LOL. Everyone thinks wheeling and getting mud on the side of your truck is cool but shuns people that does a mod that could allow more dirt inside their engine bay I guess.

I converted my hood scoop into a "functional" scoop and I can see the heat rise up out of the scoop when parked. Not a noticeable difference in dust in the engine bay, and any bit of rain that gets inside just washes the engine off for me. But shame on me for doing a mod that isn't proven by the cool guys and because I like to tinker. The best thing about it is it is completely and easily reversible, throw the stock hood back on and this guy is up to your standards again.

I'm just tired from this one thread of hearing everyone list their standards and 4Runner-political stance and comparing it to the OP's without even knowing his uses for his truck.

if this hood was a suspension lift it would be worse than a spacer lift

I'm no expert on airflow and race cars, but my understanding is that hood scoops allow for a) better passive cooling of the engine and/or b) better combustion through ram air intake. And, of course, many people think it looks great, and that should not be undersold.

On a 4R, you can use a snorkel to route the air intake to avoid dust and water (which this does not achieve, as far as I can tell), but I'm unaware of the passive cooling benefits (as mentioned above, the 4R doesn't normally operate with high engine temps) and I don't know anything about higher combustion (this seems unrelated to intake; see someone's thread ((wfo?)) on the turbo/supercharger install if you want to see about someone doing engine tuning in a 4R.)

So, what's left is looks, and a lot of people here don't like it, but like you said that's what you should probably expect on a forum. As to the functionality I'm not sold that it performs any of the normal objectives (nor that these are feasible to achieve on the 4R platform).

Here is where I'm coming from with the engine temps thing.

Imagine driving in Moab where many people wheel their trucks when its 100+ degrees. You have it in 4 low and are driving 5-10mph, with aftermarket steering fluid coolers and transmission coolers mounted to the front of your grill. Driving that slow, your engine isn't going to see much airflow and if the air does make it through the coolers at that speed, its going to be heated past ambient already. Any ventilation you can get on your hood is going to help you.

I will be installing and test fitting this hood on my 15' TEP tomorow. I want to see how it looks and vibes with the 4runner. Most importantly, I want to see if I like it on my 4runner, since looks are subjective and of course everything is not for everyone lol

I dont have a 5th Gen, but I think it might be kind of cool. Will be different for sure and different can be a good thing, Cant wait to see the finished product.

I never got it painted since I wasn't going to run it on my 4th gen. I just did the test fit for the company that produced it and drove it around to see if there were vibrations or anything that needed attention.

Plenty of 5th gen guys do spend days in Moab heat off-roading without any extra coolers and don’t have any issues. A vented hood is purely for looks on a 5th gen. IMHO

The coolers would make it worse though, for the engine temps.

Plenty of 5th gen guys make it through Moab with stock suspension. Does that make the aftermarket suspension purely for looks? There has to be a noticeable decrease in underhood temps with that hood. Whether or not that matters to anyone is for individuals to decide. I think its quite functional.

The hood is overkill from a cosmetic standpoint. That being said, enjoy. It shouldn't take away from from the strengths of the 4Runner.
