Imagine driving in Moab where many people wheel their trucks when its 100+ degrees. You have it in 4 low and are driving 5-10mph, with aftermarket steering fluid coolers and transmission coolers mounted to the front of your grill. Driving that slow, your engine isn't going to see much airflow and if the air does make it through the coolers at that speed, its going to be heated past ambient already. Any ventilation you can get on your hood is going to help you.

Fair enough, but I'm not sure extreme ambient temps in Moab while operating at snail's paces make much impact on the engine operating temperatures (unless you have a bad fan, but that's a different issue.)*

I'm all for new ideas, but I generally agree it's more solution than problem.

And, yes, many people overkill on suspension for looks, but you can't argue against suspension changes having a definite impact (for better or worse) in every aspect of driving. It's not obvious that this would have any impact in most situations.

*Although... anyone commuting long hours in stop and go traffic in Dallas, Houston, or LA... you might have a market for these...

At about 8:40 into this video Mike Sweers explains why they don't make the hood scoop functional, at least on the Tacoma.

I have no opinion as to what the OP does to his truck BTW. Just thought some of you would find it interesting.

The OP's hood is a completely different design though. His looks to vent air out the top which should aid in creating laminar flow of air from the grill.

I have a temperature probe and I'm planning to go for a drive and plot a graph to see what my under-hood temps are with the hood scoop blocked off and opened during the same short drive.

I mean my 4Runner came with a non-functional hoodscoop from the factory but I think it looks cool. Doubt I would swap hoods on my 4Runner but I most certainly would on other cars and solely for no other reason than aesthetics, so I'm looking forward to see what this looks like on the vehicle. Could be sweet looking, especially with other "beefy" looking mods. Who gives a shit about body panel functionality when people spend hundreds of dollars just to add black plastic to their rides (including myself)?

I'm curious if you do see a difference, it seems logical that you would. In my mind, 4runners are so well built that it's not needed, or if it does make a difference it's so late in the engine life that most of us will have moved on to a 6th gen. :eyebrows:
 
Hood Scoop

I have the Trail edition with the non-functional scoop. Scoops were popular when cars had big carburetor scoop intakes. When cars had carburetors. :rip: You needed a scoop to force air down their intake throats.

Now the hood scoop might make a good cold air intake if it could be channeled into the air filter box. I think it wouldn't be any dustier than the stock intake over the front wheel well. But the hood scoop has a reinforcing bar down the middle of the hood below the scoop from front to back. It interrupts the air flow and any simple approach to channeling the air through a flat tube.

It could serve to cool the engine bay more quickly when the engine is turned off if it could be opened. Here in So Cal we don't need too retain the heat so much. A cold start is maybe 40 degrees ambient on a cold day or 70 degrees F on a normal day. I'd want to be able to close it in rainy or cold weather if it was functional. Any mod to the Hood Scoop is going to have to be a DIY mod.

Really wish the Toyota engineers would have collaborated with Vin Diesel before putting out the 5th gen. We all could use a little better engine cooling. I know for me...it's been a huge problem. :lookout:

It's for cosmetics only. To somehow make it about improving on something that has no issue to begin with is just... :crazy:

That sounds like a $3 word being used in a $1 operation. I'm no physicist, but I'd seriously doubt there is much improvement in the laminar flow between these two hoods. Maybe you get eddies nearer the base of the windshield, but at that point the air is redirected by the pressure anyway. I'd guess you'd achieve more changes in laminar flow by changing the front end than the hood, but again I'm no physicist.

I'm still interested in what you see with the temperature probe, but I'm guessing the heat is venting out through the openings and sucked out with the decrease in pressure.

*an interesting test on this design, if there is any observable difference in temperature, would be to add vortex generators to the hood ahead of the cutouts

Now this is just being ignorant. How is it not a cooling improvement?

Under normal conditions there is no issue with factory cooling. When you have mud and dust plugged in the radiator, its 110 degrees out, you have other coolers blocking your radiator, you are in low range with high engine RPMs and only traveling 5-10mph, how is your engine bay not scorching? Now throw in a supercharger. Just because you as the driver can't tell a difference in engine bay temps does not mean it isn't hard on the engine.

Quite a few FJ guys I know are now running bolt-on louvers. Not only do they look great, but they can see the heat pouring out of them when they are wheeling and it's hot (Moab).

Yes, even the Toyota guy on that youtube video^^ says that.
The hood scoop is mean to bring air INTO the compartment, meant originally to provide air to intercooler for turbo diesel engines which we do not have here in the U.S.

O.P.s hood vent is supposed to vent OUT of the engine compartment.

Theoretically, we'd want to maximize airflow through the radiator = higher pressure in front lower pressure behind the radiator. A functional (open) hood scoop would *increase pressure in engine compartment and decrease airflow through the radiator.

O.P. is hoping the vents will help evacuate air from the engine compartment. However some pressure builds up in front of the windshield. Some of that could end back up in engine compartment. See *
This would require experimentation, unless manufacturer had already done that.
