(very) high-mile oil changes, 4.0 V6

Yeah, I am not too sure either, but too much focus on filtrations does still worry me a bit. I would really like to see what flow rate ranges manufacturers recommend for a vehicle, and what specific filters correspond to. For now, I tend to use OEM (truck & 4R) or OEM & Mobil1 (Jeep). I am running out of my Denso filters for the 4Runner so need to find something soon.

I had read an article that talked about the importance of oil flow rates through filters and how filter manufacturers were simply playing the micron game at the cost of flow. That is what got me thinking a couple of years ago.

Fair enough. I went with the XG 3600 instead of the FRAM recommended XG3614 for the 1GR-FE. The dimensions were the same minus the height. The 3614 was 3.343 in. and the XG 3600 is 4.922 in. I am getting even greater surface area than recommended so I'm even less concerned about flow rates.

Good to know. I'll take a look at that one plus the other top filters for my 4R. Worst case...OEM will be okay. They are apparently not as good as the original Densos (in filtering) but they can't be bad at all.

When I was a kid, one of my friends' Dad was a drag racer, Harry Holton. He used a canister oil filter on his race engines that used toilet paper as the filter media.
I guess it worked. He won the Pro Stock Nationals using toilet paper.

Well, if its good enough for a drag racer, its good enough for a 4Runner. Switching to Charmin, thanks!

those are called bypass filters, they are designed & intended for fleet type vehicles or over the road semi trucks that see millions of miles in the service life of the engine & they are usually in addition to the factory filters. they do filter very good but simply are not needed for a normal daily driver or even a performance vehicle. & im sure you were being sarcastic but the filter did not have anything to do with him winning drag races...

good to read through these old threads & see the typical nonsense about oils & other fluids. i forgot about catrains telling everyone they have to use toyota brand oil & fluids or it will damage their engine.... LOL!

Any synthetic 5W30 will get your engine to a million miles with proper OCI. Debating oil brands tends to largely be a waste of time. More important factors are ensuring your oil level is maintained. These engines are not highly stressed and we don't drive these engines at redline constantly (I have a car with an 8000 rpm redline and oil is a more concerning topic on that engine).
